Concrete has been the staple of sidewalks, but its tendency to crack as tree roots grow has some rethinking ways to improve walkability and safety. Nate Berg discusses some of these ideas in greater detail, looking at heated sidewalks, using them as a source of kinetic energy, making them glow in the dark and creating them from flexible rubber.
