Through a concerted effort of the Concrete Pavement Tech Center and research partners, AASHTO has approved a provisional specification PP 84 on performance-engineered mixtures for concrete pavements. Agencies and industry will join in a 5-year FHWA pooled fund program to implement concepts in this standard. The follow-through activities will ensure that state agencies evolve their specifications and contractors can develop concrete mixtures that reliably and sustainably meet performance needs in the specific environment. The program will include training and assistance from design through construction of concrete pavements.
Efforts will cover a variety of topics, including:
• Identifying critical properties based on project location
• Selecting tools to monitor compliance
• Conducting new tests properly
• Developing mixtures that meet requirements while improving their sensitivity to batching and construction processes and reducing financial and environmental impacts
Details on the pooled fund activities are covered in solicitation 1439. For more information, contact Colin Lobo at clobo@nrmca.org.
