As part of its Build with Strength building promotion program, NRMCA presented to the Florida Fire Marshals and Inspectors Association’s (FFMIA) 2017 Miami Educational Seminar held in Miami earlier this month. NRMCA Vice President, Sustainability, Tien Peng presented a 2-hour workshop concerning recent trends in fire and resilience in multifamily buildings. The 40 FFMIA members in attendance support life safety strategies through inspection, investigation, public education and code management with a keen interest in disaster resiliency.
Peng demonstrated the dramatic changes that have been made in U.S. building codes over the past several years and the link to the exponential increase in multifamily apartment fires throughout the country. The group was also made aware of its advocacy work in the protection of life and property and NRMCA’s Concrete Design Center. With new interest in local disaster risk assessment and mitigation as well as long-term building issues, concrete is recognized as the material of choice. Build With Strength, a coalition led by NRMCA, promotes concrete building systems through communications, project promotion, education and advocacy.
