Mendota Heights, MN-based Cemstone Companies is celebrating nine decades of providing ready mixed concrete, block and other products for homes, public infrastructure and major regional landmarks. All employees from the fourth-generation family-owned business’s three divisions were invited to an anniversary event on October 28 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The stadium is one of the most recent milestone projects built with Cemstone Companies products. In fact, 916 bags of mortar from TCC Materials, 750,000 concrete blocks from Amcon, 114,600 cubic yards of Cemstone ready-mixed concrete and 65,000 tons of sand from Dakota Aggregates are used throughout the 1.75 million square foot stadium.
“It’s fitting we invited employees and their guests to gather at U.S. Bank Stadium to celebrate their work,” said Tom Becken, CEO of Cemstone Companies. “Employees from all of our divisions, Cemstone, TCC Materials and Amcon, were integral to the construction of this massive building.”
Tom Becken was honored at the event for his 60 years with the company. Since he started back in 1957, he has helped lead the company through a strategic transformation from a small, east metro-focused company to one with operations in seven states. Cemstone had humble beginnings on St. Paul’s east side, when Tom Becken’s grandfather, Hammon T. Becken, started a business with one horse-drawn wagon delivering hand-dug sand to construction sites. Now, Cemstone Companies owns and operates a network of ready mix concrete plants, aggregate facilities, building supply manufacturing plants and concrete masonry production facilities throughout the upper Midwest.
Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton proclaimed October 28 as Cemstone Products Company Day to recognize the 90th anniversary.
“We are honored by the governor’s proclamation,” said Tom Becken. “Since my grandfather Hammon T. Becken founded Cemstone in 1927, we’ve made it our commitment to build with the best—the best employees, products and partners. This 90th anniversary is really a celebration of how people and businesses have come together to make Cemstone Companies who we are today.”
