Thanks to member diligence, 188 Producer members have completed the truck mixer driver survey this year, now representing 33% of the estimated 75,000 mixer drivers calculated from NRMCA's Annual Fleet Benchmarking & Costs Survey. Of those in the survey, 25% are union; last year, 20% were unionized. To share a few preliminary numbers, the pool increased 4% this year whereas in the previous year, the pool decreased 3%. 43% of respondents hire 18-21 year-olds while drivers with new CDLs represent only 3%. And finally, 60% of respondents reported they lost business because they did not have enough drivers. That is up a dramatic 12% from last year. The full report will be released at ConcreteWorks. Members will be able to download it from NRMCA’s website at that time.
NRMCA’s Workforce Development Committee is committed to addressing the industry’s driver shortage. It has three active task groups that work all year long on this issue. If your company is not participating and wants a stake in the solutions while providing an executive-level peer group for your driver and HR specialists, please reach out to NRMCA’s staff liaison to the committee, Eileen Dickson, at edickson@nrmca.org. A problem like this takes “the village” stepping up to the plate.
