This month, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) adopted the AIA Resolution for Urgent and Sustained Climate Action. The historic resolution passed 4,860 to 312 at the 2019 AIA National Convention in Las Vegas. The intent is to provide a framework for the AIA to prioritize and support urgent climate action to exponentially accelerate the “decarbonization” of buildings, the building sector and the built environment.
AIA also adopted and implemented the recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Panel on Codes and Standards and the Sustainability Leadership Group. The recommendation states that, “Codes, standards, and evidence-based rating systems are essential to creating a high-performing, resilient built environment. We stand for the development, adoption, and enforcement of comprehensive and coordinated building codes that mandate energy-efficient design and construction.”
Build With Strength, a coalition led by NRMCA that promotes concrete building systems through communications, project promotion, education and advocacy, can help leverage codes and standards development to place more concrete.
