NRMCA Discusses Fire Safety, Carbon Footprint Topics at Washington State Education Conference

NRMCA recently partnered with the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the Washington Aggregates and Concrete Association (WACA) to deliver a course titled Safeguarding the Public with Concrete as part of the Washington Association of Building Officials (WABO) 2022 Annual Education Institute in Lynnwood. The day-long course included presentations and discussions on various concrete topics relating to public safety. Building officials are a key stakeholder to design innovations.

NRMCA Senior Vice President, Sustainability, Codes and Standards, Tien Peng discussed Top Ten Ways to Reduce Concrete’s Carbon Footprint and Vice President, Fire Codes and Standards, Shamim Rashid-Sumar presented on Pathways to Resilience, highlighting the importance of the use of concrete as a means to address fire safety and natural disasters. The course also included updates to ACI 318 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete, ACI 562 Code Requirements for Assessment, Repair, and Rehabilitation of Existing Concrete Structures and Portland limestone cement.

Build With Strength is a coalition led by NRMCA that offers courses to architects, engineers, and building and fire code officials as part of its education efforts to promote safety and resiliency and help place more concrete.
