A new infographic titled Cradle-to-Grave/Rock-to-Rock! highlights the sustainable benefits of concrete pavement. This one-page flyer (seen here) includes bullet points on durability, resilience, heat island, lighting and carbon sequestration as well as other benefits. However, the main feature points out that concrete is made from natural ingredients and returns to those natural ingredients once its service life is completed.
“Basically, concrete is made from rock and water,” says NRMCA Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge. “And once it has reached the end of its service life, it can be crushed and, once again, becomes rock. The crushed concrete aggregate can be used as a subbase material or as aggregate in new concrete mixes. Either way, it is a natural replacement for virgin aggregate material. Rock-to-Rock! Sustainability in its simplest form.”
