Build With Strength along with the Washington Aggregates and Concrete Association and ACI's Washington State chapter earlier this month hosted a Pathways to Low Carbon Concrete symposium at the Washington Athletic Club in downtown Seattle. NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Patrick Matsche said the event drew over 150 of the region’s top influencers, users and producers of ready mixed concrete. Billed as Market Questions – Market Answers, the symposium focused on real world projects with GWP (global warming potential) targets, both previously completed and scheduled for completion. Multiple panelists from the AEC community and the local ready mixed concrete industry provided insights into best practices and lessons learned. The keynote address was delivered by Kelsey Rose, senior manager, Hines Interests on the The Market Demand for Decarbonizing Concrete.

The sustainability-focused event brought together state and local agencies, structural engineers, architects and end users to gain experience from concrete experts. Together, they addressed the concrete communities' low carbon concrete objectives, confirming how early collaboration can successfully identify outcomes, define baselines, set targets and prepare for innovation.

“We are building this town for future generations. It is our honor to lead the decarbonization efforts of our industry. I am so proud to show off to my grandchildren what we have built and will leave to them,” said Greg McKinnon of NRMCA Producer member Stoneway Concrete in Seattle. “It was so impressive to see the level of commitment from the members of NRMCA, including CalPortland, Miles Sand & Gravel, Stoneway, Heidelberg Materials, McMinnville Concrete, Salmon Bay, Holcim and others supporting and engaging in the event. The level of participation across such a wide spectrum of disciplines is an indication of how relevant and urgent a topic low carbon concrete is,” added Matsche.
