NRMCA’s Build With Strength initiative sponsored the Advancing Construction Decarbonization symposium held in Denver July 15 - 17. This annual conference brought together hundreds of sustainability and project leaders from North America and Europe to discuss the collaboration and partnerships needed to continue to advance carbon reduction strategies in the built environment, reports NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Patrick Matsche.

Panelists and speakers at the conference included many NRMCA and Build With Strength key account representatives who shared their experiences on reducing their projects' Global Warming Potential (GWP). Build With Strength’s Brandon Wray presented the Top Ten Ways to Reduce Concrete’s Carbon Footprint while U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials announced that NRMCA was awarded a $9.63 million grant aimed at Reducing Embodied Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Construction Materials and Products. The grant, which will fund a five-year project managed by NRMCA and is supported by its Build With Strength initiative, includes a team of concrete experts to educate the architectural and engineering communities on designing and specifying low carbon concrete.

In addition to sponsoring the conference, NRMCA hosted a reception after the program to celebrate progress toward carbon neutrality. Todd Ohlheiser, E.D., the Colorado Ready Mixed Concrete Association who represented many local industry leaders said, “the work of the Build With Strength team is critical to our success navigating the rapidly changing marketplace,”

NRMCA’s Build With Strength platform is a leader in supporting structural engineers, architects and end users in specifying low carbon, high-performance concrete. For more information, contact Patrick Matsche at pmatsche@nrmca.org or 415-672-5275.
