NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Greg Halsted and Clay Slocum, director of engineering with the California Nevada Cement Association (CNCA), recently hosted an Open House on an active roller-compacted concrete (RCC) pavement project in Chico, CA. Held on October 29 on the Bruce Road Reconstruction project, the event attracted approximately 50 individuals (seen here), including local Concrete Industry Management program students, regional, city and county public works officials, designers, engineers and even a few local homeowners, Halsted said.
Along with Halsted and CNCA staff, NRMCA members CEMEX and Knife River provided personnel to act as tour guides for the morning to ensure a safe and educational experience. Attendees were treated to refreshments; learned about the specifics and sustainability of RCC; walked portions of completed RCC pavement and witnessed first-hand the placement, compaction and finishing of this unique concrete material.
This ongoing project involves the reconstruction and improvement of an approximately 2-mile segment of Bruce Road from State Route 32 to Skyway, including widening the roadway from two to a 4-lane arterial roadway. Knife River is the general contractor and is utilizing the services of Pavement Recycling Systems to place and compact the 8-inch thick RCC layer. Attendees were able to watch the entire roadway construction operation and, based on the number of questions and positive comments from the group, were extremely impressed with process, Halsted said.
The Open House was an excellent avenue to show off concrete paving in action and to educate attendees on the assistance and support available to them by both NRMCA and CNCA.
