On Thursday, March 6, the Mississippi Senate passed HB 150, legislation that would increase the maximum gross weight allowed for ready mixed concrete trucks on state roads, that was introduced by state House of Representatives Transportation Committee Chairman Steve Massengill. On March 17, the bill was signed into law by Governor Tate Reeves. The law takes effect July 1.

Passage of the bill is the culmination of over two years of work by the Mississippi Concrete Association members and NRMCA’s Pave Ahead team, reports NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Amanda Hult.

HB 150 changes Mississippi’s current law to increase the gross weight allowed for three-axle concrete trucks from 60,000 lbs. to 64,000 lbs. and codifies new language for concrete trucks with four-axle configurations to allow them to haul 72,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight. The bill states that “provided further” the maximum weights shall adhere to axle weight limits as follows:

A. 22,000 lbs. for any single-axle
B. 48,000 lbs. for any two-axle tandem
C. 57,000 lbs. for any three-axle tandem

“This was a great collaboration between the Mississippi Concrete Association and members of the Pave Ahead team who completed an engineering analysis to demonstrate that this bill will have minimal impact to MDOT's roadway system," said NRMCA Executive Vice President, Local Paving, Brian Killingsworth. "Part of our mission at NRMCA is to create opportunities for our members to prosper in a way that's beneficial and safe for roadway users.”
