The ACI Houston Chapter recently held a sustainability of concrete seminar. Dr. Mo Li of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Houston spoke on Engineered Cementitious Composites and NRMCA South Central Senior National Resource Director Vance Pool spoke on ACI 330, Sustainability and Concrete, and Concrete Overlays.
"It is nice to be able to not only speak on concrete’s host of sustainable properties, especially when the proceeds of the event went to create a scholarship at the University of Houston," Pool said. "While concrete may be king in Houston, ACI 330 is still not the most common way to specify parking in the fourth largest city in the U.S. Like most of America, the majority still use AASHTO, DOT or other road building specs."
Another portion of Pool's message included how concrete can compete on first cost with competing materials, which most in the construction industry still don’t recognize. "It is important we continue to hammer the first cost issue whenever we get the chance as we are driving change and being recognized as competing on first cost," Pool said. "This will open up more potential work for our industry."
