The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded NRMCA member CalPortland Company a 2012 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award for protecting the environment through energy efficiency. The Glendora, CA-based CalPortland will be recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, DC, on March 15. CalPortland has been an ENERGY STAR partner since 1996. This is the eighth consecutive time it has been awarded an ENERGY STAR award at the national level with the last six awards being for Sustained Excellence.
Recent accomplishments include:
• Reducing energy intensity by nearly 1 percent while cutting total energy use by 3.2 percent in 2011 despite challenging market conditions in the construction industry.
• Developing an extensive internal communication and information infrastructure to support energy management activities across the company.
• Revamping the company’s purchasing policy to acquire only energy-efficient products through national accounts and specifications defined by the company.
• Supporting research into new technologies that reduce energy consumption in plant operations.
• Focusing on improvements in fuel efficiency for its extensive fleet of vehicles.
• Creating a Green Team to support the company’s sustainability efforts.
