The past two months have seen construction starts on two new ICF multifamily projects on the East Coast, reports NRMCA Vice President, Building Innovations, Gregg Lewis. EYC Companies of Charleston, SC, is building a 220-unit apartment complex called 17 South using ICF construction for its exterior walls. NRMCA members can stay apprised of the latest work on this project from the EYC Web site where it regularly updates with new drone footage of the construction site. Lewis continues to work with the EYC team to help it showcase this example of resilient construction while working with the team to expand its use of concrete on the project. EYC Companies has several additional multifamily projects in the Carolinas that are expected to start construction in the next two years using the ICF exterior wall system.

Further north in Maryland, David Azar is developing the Chesapeake Village Center project on Kent Island. This two-phase multifamily project is smaller than 17 South, but is using ICFs and concrete for the exterior walls, floors, demising walls between the residential units, and along the corridor walls at each floor. The first footage of the construction of this new project can be seen here. Azar selected ICFs and concrete because he understood the long-term value proposition and the exemplary energy performance and resilience that concrete would bring to his project. NRMCA Producer member Chaney Enterprises is providing the concrete for the project. NRMCA completed a Design Assistance Report for the Chesapeake Village Center project allowing the developer to better understand how simple it could be to build with concrete and insulated concrete forms.
