NRMCA Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge recently participated in a pervious concrete seminar hosted by the Virginia Ready Mixed Concrete Association (VRMCA). The program, “Paradigm Shift: VDOT Opts for Pervious Concrete,” was presented by the Southwest VA Concrete Advisory Council of VRMCA and highlighted the pervious concrete parking lot constructed at the Interstate Route 81 Exit 140 Park & Ride in Salem, VA.
Over 60 individuals representing several municipalities and engineering firms, as well as students from Virginia Tech, attended the event. Travis Higgs, project engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), gave a presentation that focused on the department’s decision to utilize pervious concrete and on the specifications and construction of the project. Kresge followed with a presentation that highlighted the benefits of pervious concrete for stormwater management. Higgs and Kresge fielded a number of questions that were both general with regard to pervious concrete and specific to the project.
Following the presentations, attendees were invited to visit the site where a demonstration of the concrete’s permeability was given. Representatives from Procon Concrete Specialists, Inc., the project’s concrete contractor, were also on site to answer questions.
