Coal Ash Association Releases Report on Production of Coal Combustion Products
The American Coal Ash Association has released its annual Production and Use Survey for 2022. Production of coal combustion products (CCP) declined from 77.3 million tons in 2021 to 75.2 million tons while beneficial use in 2022 was 46.8 million tons, an increase of 1 percent from 2021. 62% of coal ash produced was recycled. Other highlights include:
- Coal represents 20 percent of the fuel used for electricity generation in the U.S. – this resulted in 28 million tons of fly ash and 7.5 million tons of bottom ash.
- Coal fly ash used in concrete was at 10.9 million tons, down from 11.9 million tons, primarily due to shifting supply dynamics associated with closures of coal-fueled power plants.
- Harvested ash from previously disposed sources is estimated at 8.7 percent of the volume of ash recycled and is increasing.
- CCP used in cement production exceeded 6 million tons, an increase of 8 percent.
