NRMCA Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge was a featured presenter at the Hudson Valley ReLeaf 2016 Urban Forestry Workshop. Sponsored by Orange County Planning, Hudson Valley ReLeaf, NYSDEC Urban Forestry, NYS Urban Forestry Council and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Westchester County, the workshop was held at the State University of New York (SUNY) Orange campus in Newburgh.
Kresge’s presentation on Designing and Specifying Pervious Concrete was very well received by the group, which included landscapers, arborists and municipal planners from throughout the lower Hudson Valley region. He particularly focused on the importance of proper specifications, installation and maintenance of pervious concrete pavement. Several of the individuals expressed interest in pursuing utilizing pervious concrete in their streetscape projects.

A condensed version of the popular NRMCA Parking Lot Boot Camp drew 30 attendees to the one-day session held last week at the American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC) annual convention in Minneapolis. Contractors from both coasts and border to border learned the process of building their businesses in parking lot paving applications. As one contractor commented at the end of the day, "I was only going to sit in on the morning session and attend something else in the afternoon, but this was so good I decided to come back to get all the information."
Parking Lot Boot Camp at the conference was conducted by NRMCA’s Jon Hansen, senior vice president, local paving, and Phil Kresge, vice president, local paving.
For more information about hosting a Parking Lot Boot Camp for your company contact Jon Hansen at jhansen@nrmca.org or any member of the local paving team.

Sponsored by the Truck Mixer Manufacturers Bureau, NRMCA’s 11th Annual National Mixer Driver Championship was held on Sunday, September 18, at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville, TN, during NRMCA’s annual ConcretWorks event. Some 83 drivers competed for the title "Best of the Best," including state rodeo champions as well as NRMCA member company champions from around the nation.
The winners of the competition were announced at the Monday Night Awards Dinner at the Wildhorse Saloon in downtown Nashville, with Chris Harrison of Mobley Concrete Company, Russellville, AR, (image on righ) earning this year’s grand prize.
Just prior to the award presentations, a musical presentation of championship competition highlights was shown to the enthusiastic audience (click here to watch the video).
Last week, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) issued a notice announcing that effective January 1, 2017, the minimum wage rate for covered workers under federal contractors would increase to $10.20 per hour. This new rate would apply "to workers performing work on or in connection with Federal contracts". The federal contractor minimum wage increase is in response to President Obama’s Executive Order 13658 from February 12, 2014 raising the wage in 2015 and dictating that DOL, at its discretion, raise the rate again "annually thereafter."
