Pavement
A Texas construction company is working with NRMCA to provide follow up and cost estimates on leads generated from the International Conference of Shopping Centers (ICSC) RECon conference held earlier this year in Austin. Willert Construction Inc. has been serving the Dallas-Fort Worth area since 1994.
Continuing a tradition of support begun by the PCA Rocky Mountain Region, Don A. Clem, PE, was invited to be a guest lecturer before engineering students at the University of Colorado at Denver. Clem spoke before 15 students in Professor Caroline Clevenger’s Material and Methods class on how hot and cold weather affects construction of concrete for parking lots. Additionally, students were introduced to NRMCA as a resource for technical assistance as they embark on their careers and were encouraged to utilize the NRMCA DAP program for paving and buildings.
For more information contact Don A. Clem at dclem@nrmca.org.
The Delaware Department of Transportation has just completed construction of a pervious concrete park & ride facility in Lewes, reports NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Ken Justice.
Government Affairs
Media articles on Congress, transportation infrastructure, regulation, taxes and other subjects, each of which relate to the ready mixed concrete industry, are updated each week by NRMCA's Government Affairs staff. Click here to access the most recent compilation of articles for September 26 -September 29, 2016.
If you would like to receive this weekly updated link in a separate e-mail, or if you have questions or comments about the roundup, contact NRMCA’s Jill Landry at jlandry@nrmca.org.
NRMCA is now accepting entries for its 2017 Kids Art Contest, sponsored by the Truck Mixer Manufacturers Bureau. The theme for the contest is "Build with Strength - Building to Withstand the Test of Time." The contest is open to children up to grade 12 who have a relationship with an NRMCA member.
The October 2016 issue of Concrete Capitol Connection is now available online. The issue includes updates on the federal budget, WRDA bill, estate tax rulemaking and other action affecting the ready mixed concrete industry.

Buildings
Recently, NRMCA state and local government affairs professionals met with a homebuilder group to discuss implementing an optional appendix for resilient construction into a particular state’s building code. The homebuilders expressed concern that resiliency should not be mandated and that even an optional implementation would be seen as a slippery slope.
According to a new poll released earlier this week, Georgia voters support the recently-passed Sandy Springs, GA, construction regulations that require buildings over three stories tall or more than 100,000 square feet in total size to be constructed with enhanced quality materials like concrete or steel (96% support).
In late September, Philadelphia hosted the 11th Annual Passive House Conference September. Why should NRMCA members care about this relatively small group of building science experts and forward-thinking green building proponents?
NRMCA’s Michael Wymant and Gregg Lewis exhibited the Build with Strength program at the National Multifamily Housing Council Student Housing Conference and Expo in New Orleans last week to offer concrete solutions for student housing.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s commitment to developing a greener skyline doesn't go far enough. Instead, one writer argues that it is "a great time for the economically and environmentally-conscious citizens of Chicago to call on government officials to incorporate life-cycle thinking into building design decisions."
The writer is Jeremy Gregory, executive director of the MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub which is co-funded by the RMC Research & Education Foundation and the Portland Cement Association. Read the article here as it appeared online in the October 4 edition of the Chicago Business Journal.
