Association & Industry News
It is with sadness that NRMCA notes the recent death of Jerry Woods, a longtime industry advocate who served with distinction at both the Iowa and Illinois ready mixed concrete associations along with the Portland Cement Association (PCA). Woods, 78, died November 11 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Last week at the Washington Aggregates & Concrete Associations’ (WACA) educational Winter Workshop in Spokane, NRMCA President Robert Garbini discussed the Build with Strength campaign to promote concrete building systems through communications, direct project promotion, education and advocacy. Tien Peng, NRMCA’s vice president of sustainability, then discussed the significant changes to LEED v4, how concrete contributes to green building and recent developments in the cement industry. Approximately 40 industry professionals from the Pacific Northwest as well as local government agency representatives attended.
Government Affairs
Propelled by record fundraising efforts, CONCRETEPAC was able to invest a record-breaking $423,500 to 122 pro-ready mixed concrete candidates in 42 states for the U.S. House and Senate by Election Day. A Post Election Report can be found here. CONCRETEPAC enjoyed a 95% win rate and is excited to welcome back many of our Congressional Champions when the 115th Congress begins in January. On November 14, the Concrete Masonry Products Research, Education, and Promotion Act of 2015 (HR 985) passed without objection in the House. This marks the first time the concrete masonry industry has been successful in getting a vote on this bill. It was introduced by Rep. Brett Guthrie (R-02-KY) and lead cosponsor Rep. Kathy Castor (D-14-FL) and would authorize concrete masonry to conduct an industry-wide referendum establishing a commodity check-off program which would be sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Commerce
NRMCA is now accepting entries for its 2017 Kids Art Contest, sponsored by the Truck Mixer Manufacturers Bureau. The theme for the contest is "Build with Strength - Building to Withstand the Test of Time." The contest is open to children up to grade 12 who have a relationship with an NRMCA member.
NRMCA will host its fourth quarterly DC Days for 2016 on Thursday, December 1. Please join your industry peers on Capitol Hill to help educate Members of Congress and their staffs regarding advocacy issues impacting the ready mixed concrete industry. This will be your last opportunity to discuss how the laws that they pass in the 114th Congress impact your day-to-day operations.

NRMCA has verified a system level Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) program to help members meet new product transparency credits in green building standards. Martin Marietta is the first concrete producer to verify EPDs using the new system level EPD verification procedure; it has verified 300 products (50 concrete mix designs from six plants) owned and operated by the Rocky Mountain Division.
NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovation, Michael Wymant traveled to Dorval, FL, earlier this week to present Build with Strength to a select group of designers in conjunction with Blue Buildings Inc. and Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) manufacturer Quadlock. More than 30 professionals attended the event, including structural engineers. It was held at the Biscayne Bay Brewing Company in Dorval; a unique space.
OES
Following President-elect Donald Trump’s upset election win eyes are turning toward potential Trump Administration opportunities. Particularly, NRMCA is looking toward the regulatory front opportunities to both stall and vacate a host of erroneous, burdensome and costly industry regulations.
