Association & Industry News
NRMCA Members are asked to please take a few minutes to participate in a 7-question survey on the use of building information modeling (BIM) in the concrete industry. The survey has been created as part of the Strategic Development Council’s BIM initiative in order to gain better understanding of the benefits and barriers to the use of BIM. Surveys on BIM have been performed for the construction industry in general, but this particular survey is focused on the concrete industry’s perspective. Results will be analyzed to attempt to answer the following questions:
• What are the benefits to BIM?
• Who benefits?
• What are the disadvantages?
• How do we share the benefits?
The survey is located here and will be open through Wednesday, January 18.

Join NRMCA and Athena Sustainable Material Institute on Tuesday, January 10, from 1 to 2 p.m. Eastern time as we will discuss updates to the industry-wide EPD, the regional Benchmark Report and how they can be used to demonstrate compliance with green building standards. The Webinar will also introduce an EPD tool for the concrete industry: the Athena Institute has a new Web-based tool for ready mixed concrete manufacturers that:
• Is customized to individual operations;
• Delivers instant LCA/EPD data for any mix; and
• Helps create full LCA reports and EPDs at low cost.
They’ve built this tool on its previous industry-average LCA work for NRMCA; it can help support ready mix producers to find the "greenest" mixes when helping customers earn LEED points.

The upcoming NRMCA Regional Short Course scheduled February 6-10, 2017 at the office of ACG of Utah in Salt Lake City. The short course provides a fundamental understanding of concrete, aggregates and concrete making materials; requirements in industry codes and standards; and proportioning concrete mixtures. Attendees have the opportunity to obtain industry-recognized NRMCA certifications: NRMCA Level 2 and 3 Concrete Technologist certification and the NRMCA Grade II Field Testing Technician certification. These industry certifications are essential for technical service personnel with suppliers of materials to the concrete industry and with concrete producers.
Registration for the course will close soon due to space restrictions and only a few spots remain. Interested persons should register early.

NRMCA has released version 2 of the Quality Certification program. To encourage participation, a substantial discount is being provided to companies that apply prior to March 31, 2017.
Education & Training
The last two Certified Concrete Sales Professional (CCSP) series are open for registration. They will be taught at NRMCA’s headquarters in Silver Spring, MD. Register now and take the fee as a 2016 expense. The schedule is as follows:
• Module 3: RMC Business Knowledge, January 24-26. Content is an overview of critical business concepts used in the RMC business, focusing on RMC job cost analysis. Assure your reps know the factors to price a job profitably without solely relying on a plug-and-chug software program.
• Module 4: Professional Sales Skills and Promotion, March 21-23. Mid-level staff learn to apply consultative, team-based, cross-selling methods in ready mixed concrete situations.
Each class stands alone so they do NOT have to be taken consecutively or collectively. Additionally, these are the required courses in the STEPS® Sales and Promotion certification program, where those in the field earn the industry's most prestigious capstone certification, the CCPf.
