Pavement
NRMCA, partnering with the Oregon Concrete & Aggregates Producers Association (OCAPA) and the Northwest Cement Council, conducted concrete flatwork seminars/demonstrations in Wilsonville, Eugene and Bend, OR, from September 26 - 28. The classroom portion of the program was presented by NRMCA Vice President, Local Paving, Don A. Clem, PE, while his colleague, Ken Justice, PE, NRMCA senior director, local paving, demonstrated how to properly place and finish concrete.
NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Ken Justice recently taught a full day concrete pavement design seminar in Jessup, MD. More than 50 engineers and municipal and public works officials attended.
Dave Gray of GCC of America and recent NRMCA Promoter of the Year has released a new promotional video on YouTube, reports NRMCA Vice President, Local Paving, Don Clem, PE. The video documents the construction of a 26,000 square foot concrete overlay over an asphalt parking lot in Thornton, CO. The parking lot was constructed by American Society of Concrete Contractor member Leonard Velasquez of SLV Quality Concrete. Gray worked with Clem, Velasquez and the City of Thornton on the design of the concrete overlay.

Association & Industry News
The Portland Cement Association (PCA) is revising its standard called PCA100, Prescriptive Design of Exterior Concrete Walls for One- and Two-Family Dwellings. Provisions of PCA100 apply to the design and construction of concrete footings, foundation walls and above-grade walls, both load bearing and non-load bearing, intended primarily for use in detached one- and two-family dwellings. PCA100-2017 is based on the 2014 edition of the American Concrete Institute Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete and the 2015 International Residential Code.
Buildings
Last week, Build with Strength teamed with the Alabama Concrete Industries Association to present its seminar for architects, engineers, builders and developers. "Days of Concrete Knowledge" was offered on Tuesday, September 26, in Mobile; Wednesday, September 27, in Birmingham and Thursday, September 28, in Huntsville.

Find out how your driver pool stacks up regionally and nationally from accessing NRMCA’s 2017 Mixer Driver Recruitment and Retention Survey report. This year, research uncovered a brighter picture and more stable driver pool than in the past. Nevertheless, 36 percent of producers walked away from business due to a lack of mixer drivers. The comprehensive report also includes additional insight and comparisons from a number of entities, including the American Transportation Research Institute, the Society of Human Resource Management, and employment numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

With the good times rolling, it is challenging to schedule safety training, but that's when it's needed most. NRMCA offers a solution with online safety lessons accessible from any computer, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The videos are shot at ready mixed concrete producers’ plants and at onsite pours so your employees can quickly connect concepts directly to their jobs. Viewing access is purchased in units of 10 participants for a 30-day streaming period. Each person who completes the safety lesson can print an individualized certificate. Behind the scenes, busy supervisors or HR can track employees’ individual progress and retrieve their proof of training.
Watch previews of lessons here. Questions? Contact Jacques Jenkins at jjenkins@nrmca.org or 240-485-1165.
