NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Patrick Matsche presented Concrete Sustainability: Quantifying and Decarbonizing Concrete - How Prescriptive Specs Limit Sustainability in December in Sandy, UT. The event, held with the support of the Utah Ready Mixed Concrete Association (URMCA) Executive Director Brad Stevenson, focused on specifiers of ready mixed concrete. Matsche (seen here at right with ACI Intermountain's Tammy Meldrum), noted that sustainability within Utah is gaining momentum and the ready mixed concrete industry is taking a leadership role in that effort.

NRMCA, the ACI Intermountain Chapter, URMCA and industry leaders across Utah discussed how decarbonizing the built environment today and in the future will take shape. Concrete is the backbone of modern society. What does the future hold?

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) Intermountain Chapter was founded in 1983 to further the education of concrete in relation to technical practice, scientific investigation and research. In addition to Utah, the chapter covers Southern Idaho, Western Wyoming and Southwestern Montana.

The Build With Strength platform is a leader in supporting structural engineers, architects, end users and specifiers in achieving low carbon, high-performance concrete. For more information, contact Patrick Matsche at pmatsche@nrmca.org or 415-672-5275.

On December 10, Build With Strength Director, Building Innovations, Justin McCain partnered with the Oklahoma Ready Mixed Concrete Association to present the Top 10 Ways to Reduce Concrete’s Carbon Footprint to the American Concrete Institute's Oklahoma Chapter. The event was attended by approximately 20 attendees, including ready mix producers, owners, engineers and architects who were provided education and resources for specifying and implementing sustainable concrete design.

McCain said he aimed to send a clear message: materials cannot be considered sustainable if they are not also resilient. Concrete is the material of choice because of its long-term durability and unique capability to accomplish the sustainability goals of projects. He also introduced the available services offered by the Build With Strength team to the design-build community, including specification reviews, life cycle assessments and concrete design assistance. The meetings provided valuable insight into the firms along with guidance on how adopting performance-based specifications will maximize the ready mixed industry’s ability to deliver achievable concrete results.

On December 17, NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Frank Mruk and Tremco/Nudura Senior Technical Sales Executive Ken Lynch presented a workshop titled Benefits of Integrated Concrete Formwork at the Waltham, MA, corporate headquarters of Commodore Builders. More than 20 employees attended the event (some seen here) and the session was recorded for distribution.

Founded in 2002, Commodore Builders is a veteran-owned, New England-based construction management firm. It was ranked as the fourth largest general contractor in Massachusetts based on revenue and also ranked 11th on the Boston Business Journal's Middle Market Leaders list.

The Build With Strength program is a leader in supporting contractors, architects and specifiers in designing state-of-the-art concrete buildings. For more information, contact Frank Mruk at fmruk@nrmca.org.

Member companies of NRMCA may grant prior authorization to only one national trade association PAC per calendar year. However, granting prior authorization for CONCRETEPAC does not preclude employees of member companies from contributing to local or state PACs, national member and ideological PACs or a company's own federal PAC. Granting prior authorization to CONCRETEPAC does not require you or your employees to contribute to CONCRETEPAC; it only allows NRMCA to inform you of upcoming events such as the Hollywood Under the Stars Gala in March.
