Earlier this month, almost 100 attendees (some seen here) from Minnesota and surrounding states were introduced to the benefits of insulating concrete forms (ICFs) as well as advances in industry strategies for lower carbon concrete at a roundtable discussion co-sponsored by the Minnesota Concrete Council, the Aggregate and Ready Mix Association of Minnesota and NRMCA, and hosted by Duininck Concrete. The event was the first of its kind held in Western Minnesota, reports Senior Director, Building Innovations, Donn Thompson.
Build With Strength Senior Directors, Building Innovations, Patrick Matsche and Brandon Wray met recently with the Bechtel Group, a Reston, VA-based engineering, procurement, construction and project management company, to discuss the decarbonization of concrete. Bechtel Corporation, founded in San Francisco in 1898, has employees and projects in more than 33 countries.
Last week, NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Frank Mruk met with Sarah Lufler and Norm Eccleston of Habitat for Humanity's Eastern Connecticut chapter and Ken Lynch of Nudura to plan a new Habit for Humanity 27-house development in Ledyard. The development will be the largest project to date in Connecticut and will consist of four different prototype layouts, built in five phases. The project will be a passive house project of ICF construction. To date, NRMCA through its partnership with Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliates has influenced and built more than 100 concrete homes across 40 states. NRMCA Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge recently met with the Airfield Maintenance Department of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority at John Glenn Columbus International Airport in Columbus, OH. The meeting was facilitated by Ohio Concrete Association (OCA) Central/Southeast Promotion Director Lisa Weaver-Moon. Kresge spoke on Maintenance and Repair of Concrete Pavement, focusing on Concrete Pavement Restoration (CPR) methodologies as well as joint sealing and other proper maintenance practices. Concrete overlays of existing asphalt pavement were also discussed. OCA Staff Engineer Tom Boren joined Weaver-Moon and Kresge and assisted in the Q&A session that followed the presentation. Besides the John Glenn Columbus International Airport, the Airport Authority also oversees operations at Rickenbacker International Airport and Bolton Field Airport. Last year, more than 9.2 million passengers passed through these airports. A new $2 billion terminal is currently under construction at John Glenn Columbus airport. For more information, contact Phil Kresge at pkresge@nrmca.org.
For years, the Concrete Council in Missouri has produced a weekly email blast to architects, engineers, public agencies, owners, members and others as part of an overall concrete promotion program. Each year, a new focus is selected; past themes have included That's Concrete!?, That's TiltUp!?, That's ICF?!, etc., featuring case studies from local projects or from the Build With Strength program. The e-mail blasts also include details for upcoming events with links to register online. This year, the appeal (seen here) is to the decision-maker and his or her desire to be perceived as smart. The program makes them the focus, rather than concrete. The program will be supplemented with related materials, all directed toward helping specifiers look smart to their superiors, clients, taxpayers and others. "The social currency of looking smart is a universal emotion and this program is a weekly source of material that just happens to focus on why using concrete is a smart decision," said Oliver (Skip) Dulle of the Concrete Council. Other weekly topics for upcoming e-mail blasts include Parking Lot Overlays, Crown Curb, ICF Schools, CIP Constructability, Real-Time Strength Monitoring, Parking Lots/Specify Concrete First, Internal Curing, TiltUp for Versatility, Asset Financing, CIP Parking Structures, Life-Cycle Cost Analysis, Lower Utility Costs/Net-Zero, Roadway Overlays, Super-flat Floors, Durability vs. Strength, ADA-Compliant Trails and Shared Use Path, Brighter at Night Parking Lots and Pet-Friendly Trails. For more information, contact Mr. Dulle at oad@dulleco.com. Engineering
