Feraidon Ataie, Ph.D., assistant professor of engineering, California State University-Chico, and head of Chico's CIM program, has won the 2017 Professor of the Year Award from ASTM International. The ASTM International Professor of the Year Award recognizes and rewards the contributions of educators in developing students’ understanding of standards. IDS GeoRadar, an Italian supplier of ground penetrating radar (GPR), has launched a new tool for locating objects or voids in structures before cutting or drilling. C-thrue is a radar-based device for scanning structures to locate rebar, cables, cavities, conduits or other objects buried in the concrete before cutting or drilling into it. The C-thrue software enables visualisation of 3D images to simplify data interpretation. The system also uses augmented reality for data visualisation and sharing across operators. Buildings
NRMCA’s Lionel Lemay coauthored a recently published book titled Coal Combustion Products (CCPs): Their Nature, Utilization and Beneficiation. The book, published by Elsivier is a valuable resource for engineers and scientists from the coal, cement, concrete and construction industries seeking an in-depth guide to the characteristics, utilization, beneficiation and environmental impacts of coal combustion by-products. Last week, NRMCA representatives met with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to discuss the agency’s newly created Smart Sectors Program. The program, created at the direction of current EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, aims to “facilitate better communication [with trade associations] and streamline operations internally at EPA” while helping to “address executive orders on regulatory reform, energy independence, permit streamlining, and the reconsideration of major regulations.” The 2017 Mixer Truck Rollover Survey is designed to collect data on actual rollovers of ready mixed concrete trucks in calendar year 2017. The electronic form uses check and drop down boxes for ease of completion and data compilation. The data collected is for rollovers that occur in calendar year 2017; no personal or company names are required to complete the form. NRMCA's Ready Mixed Concrete Delivery Professional Driver of the Year Award acknowledges the significant contribution of ready mixed concrete truck drivers to the growth and success of individual companies and the ready mixed concrete industry. As a salute to these key members of the concrete production and delivery team, the award recognizes the driver’s career achievement, safety, professionalism, competence and customer service skills in a manner that will enhance the industry and public image of the career ready mixed concrete delivery professional. The 2018 Ready Mixed Concrete Truck Driver of the Year Award winner will be honored at an awards presentation ceremony at NRMCA’s Annual Convention in Houston in March 2018. The Delaware Department of Transpiration, along with one of its consultants, Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson, Inc. (JMT), has been working with NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Ken Justice, on developing design and jointing plans, and specifications for several roadway projects throughout the state. NRMCA joined forces with the American Concrete Pavement Association's (APWA) Colorado Wyoming Chapter in sponsoring a booth at the 4th Annual APWA Colorado Chapter Conference held on October 23-24 in Arvada, reports NRMCA Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Don A. Clem, PE. The conference, which focused on performance, drew over 200 public works professionals from throughout Colorado. The program featured high-level presentations from transportation leaders, including executive level directors of the Colorado Department of Transportation, E-470 Authority, and the Regional Transportation District. The APWA Colorado Chapter is recognized as one of the strongest APWA chapters in the west. The booth was staffed by Clem and Jamie Johnson, PE, paving engineer, ACPA CO/ WY.
