NRMCA’s video, Jobsite Chute Rinse-off, has been awarded the 2018 Communicator Distinction Award by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts (AIVA). The training lesson was filmed in Spanish Fork, UT, with NRMCA Producer member Jack B. Parson Company, a CRH Company. The Communicator Awards is the largest and most competitive awards program honoring creative excellence for communications professionals, with AIVA receiving over 6,000 entries from companies and agencies of all sizes. They are judged and overseen by AIVA’s 600+ members, including PureMatter, Condè Nast, Disney, Republica, Sesame Workshop, MTV, Starbucks, Time Inc., Tribal DDB, Yahoo! and many others

NRMCA’s Annual Safety Award acknowledges the significant contribution that safety work practices gives to the growth and success of individual companies and the ready mixed concrete industry as a whole. The NRMCA Annual Safety Award is presented to an individual or company whose actions represent the very highest in the advancement of safety in the ready mixed concrete industry. The award program is generously sponsored by the Truck Mixer Manufacturers Bureau (TMMB). NRMCA’s Commitment to Environmental Excellence Awards competition offers producers national recognition for outstanding contributions to protecting the environment and maintaining sound management practice in their operations. The program salutes companies that have not only met, but surpassed governmental compliance measures and demonstrated a commitment to environmental excellence through plant and staff investment. Any NRMCA member company producing ready mixed concrete from a fixed plant location in the U.S., its territories or Canada is eligible to enter. Awards will be determined upon individual plant merits. Winning entrants will be honored at the Awards Luncheon at NRMCA‘s ConcreteWorks this October in Washington, DC. Winners will also be featured in a 2018 edition of NRMCA’s Concrete InFocus magazine as well as Concrete Products magazine. NRMCA Vice President, Local Paving, Don Clem, PE, recently travelled to Tulsa, OK, to present on concrete intersections at a streets and local roads seminar sponsored by the Oklahoma Ready Mixed Concrete Association (Mike Tinker, executive director) and the American Concrete Pavement Association – Oklahoma/ Arkansas Chapter (Brent Burwell, executive director). The seminar was attended by a mix of consultants, geotechnical engineers, city representatives and industry personnel. Other presenters included Megan Dangel, PE, Central Plains Cement Company; Matt Wilson, BASF and Mr. Burwell. Terracon Engineering hosted the event. The city of Thornton, CO, is investing $7 million in a major facelift for its Thorncreek Golf Course which was closed all last season, reports NRMCA Vice President, Local Paving, Don Clem. City officials wanted a parking lot which complemented its major investment in the golf course and clubhouse, so they decided to go with the gold standard of parking lots – concrete! The 92,000 square foot overlay of the existing asphalt parking lot saved time, and cost less than the traditional removal and replacement method of construction.

Last week, the House farm bill, which contained part of the Timber Innovation Act (TIA), failed by a vote of 198-213. It now appears less likely that the House will find a compromise and pass H.R. 2, leaving the provisions of the TIA without a vehicle for the time being. Earlier this year, in a victory for NRMCA and coalition partners, the House Agriculture Committee included only one provision of the Timber Innovation Act in the 2018 farm bill, stripping out the Tall Wood Building Prize Competition that sought to put wood in the tall building market, 85 feet and above. NRMCA met with key members of the House Agriculture Committee and Rules Committee to monitor for and defeat pro-wood amendments. NRMCA and coalition partners continue to work to prevent the inclusion of the Tall Wood Building Competition in the Senate farm bill. The Transportation Construction Coalition (TCC) Fly-In took place May 15-16 in Washington, DC, with about 30 NRMCA members taking part in the annual lobbying day, including NRMCA Chairman Rodney Grogan and Immediate Past Chairman Scott Parson. Hundreds of industry professionals participated in the TCC Fly-In, lobbying for federal funding for infrastructure and a long-term fix to the Highway Trust Fund. In addition, NRMCA members lobbied on the importance of resilient construction and in opposition to the Timber Innovation Act. Conducting visits with NRMCA Government Affairs staff were NRMCA members Hix Smith, Joe Ferrara, Andy Guinn, Hicks Winters and Kerri Leininger. Now in its 15th year, NRMCA's Developing Industry’s Leaders (DIL) program is a premier career development tool. Participants are given the opportunity to advance their strategic thinking skills and network with peers while being mentored by NRMCA’s senior staff. The DIL agenda differs from other leadership programs in that it exposes 24 selected participants to our industry’s big issues from an all-encompassing, national perspective. Once done with their formal training, DILs are expected to make a long-term commitment to move their team’s initiative forward by joining, and attending, the appropriate NRMCA committee meeting twice a year. DIL participation on NRMCA’s committees infuses new blood into an industry’s leadership track. Calendar
