NRMCA is offering its information-packed, one-day course, Handling Concrete Specifications, Low Strength Problems and Mixture Submittals, intended for concrete producers, contractors, engineers and testing labs on Wednesday, February 27 in Milwaukee in association with the Wisconsin Ready Mixed Concrete Association. This one-day course will discuss the latest changes to the code and specification requirements (ACI 318, 301, ASTM C94) governing ready mixed concrete.
The National Concrete Pavement Technology Center recently completed a 5-year project funded by the Federal Highway Administration to provide information on the latest in concrete pavement technology, knowledge, and innovation to the state highway agencies. The project supports FHWA’s program goal of Accelerated Implementation and Deployment of Pavement Technologies. The results of this effort are documented in two summary documents that facilitate sharing of various project findings and help state agencies manage concrete pavement resources more efficiently. The focus involved promoting better performance in the following areas: • Sustainability aspects of concrete pavements and materials; • Preservation and maintenance techniques for concrete pavements; • Long-life concrete pavements; • Innovative concrete materials; and • New technologies and advancements in concrete pavement placement. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) recently approved a petition filed by the American Trucking Associations (ATA) asking FMCSA to prevent the application of the state of California’s controversial rest and meal break rules (RMB rules) to interstate trucking operations.

Buildings
Due to market drivers (i.e., Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) in green building standards, most notably LEED V4) NRMCA published version 1.0 of the Industry-Wide EPD (IW-EPD) in 2014. Seventy companies representing over 2,300 plants participated.
Scott Campbell, Ph.D., P.E. is the newest member of NRMCA’s building promotion team. Based in Milwaukee, Campbell is a senior vice president of structures and codes; he will join his colleagues in advancing the interests of the industry in model codes and technical standards, and support state and local advocacy efforts. Scott holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He has multiple publications in the areas of nonlinear analysis and blast design of buildings.
Registration for NRMCA’s Spring 2019 Safety Course scheduled for April 9 - 11 in Orlando, FL, is still open. This 2.5-day course teaches participants about OSHA safety compliance. It begins with why safety is so important and details the reasons why an effective safety program actually saves money through loss prevention and control. Participants learn about the new silica rule, electrical safety, machine guarding, fall protection, hazard communication, confined spaces, personal protective equipment, firefighting and evacuation, maintenance shop safety, chute handling, fleet safety, pre-trip inspection and much more.
