The Natural Pozzolan Association (NPA), in conjunction with Kirkland Mining Company (KMC), is hosting the inaugural Natural Pozzolan Symposium at a resort near Phoenix on May 16 - 17. The symposium will include numerous presentations and an optional tour of the KMC pumiceous-tuff deposit in Kirkland, AZ, which has recently received permits. Natural pozzolans, much like fly ash and slag cement, can help improve concrete performance. Click here for registration and more information.

NRMCA has updated the checklist and Powerpoint presentation “Code and Standards Requirements for Acceptance Testing.” The updates incorporate language pertinent to testing in the current version of the AIA MasterSpec (December 2018) version and suggestions in “Who is Watching out for the Cylinders?” published in Concrete International, August 2018. The presentation discusses the following, citing references in industry standards.

Registration for NRMCA’s Spring Safety Course is now open; please note that this course will sell out very soon. It will take place April 9 - 11 in Orlando, FL. This 2.5-day course teaches participants about OSHA safety compliance. It begins with why safety is so important and details the reasons why an effective safety program actually saves money through loss prevention and control. Participants learn about the new silica rule, electrical safety, machine guarding, fall protection, hazard communication, confined spaces, personal protective equipment, firefighting and evacuation, maintenance shop safety, chute handling, fleet safety, pre-trip inspection and much more. The 2019 Fleet Benchmarking Survey is filled out by industry fleet managers and/or financial managers early each year, based on data gathered from the previous calendar year’s performance. This year’s form includes new questions on mixer drum composition, idle time and types of fuel being used. The Fleet Benchmarking Survey is used to establish industry benchmarking norms and procedures. Information gathered from the survey is published each fall in NRMCA's Concrete InFocus magazine. A shorter Executive Summary of the survey is also made available to all. The deadline to submit entries to Gary Mullings at gmullings@nrmca.org is Friday, April 19. NRMCA Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge recently participated in the Ohio Concrete Association’s (OCA) Concrete Contractor Seminar in Lima, OH. Kresge’s presentation, “Zero Defects Concrete,” focused on common surface defects in flatwork concrete and how to avoid them. Other related topics included Introduction to Concrete Admixtures, Concrete Forensics Petrography and Understanding the Importance of Concrete Field Testing. Additionally, presentations were given on decorative concrete and LEED v4.1. The event was held at Rhodes State College and was attended by over 60 concrete contractors and producers. The program was organized by Wayne Moening, OCA’s Northwest Regional promotion director. For more information, contact Phil Kresge at pkresge@nrmca.org. The Safety Contest & Benchmarking Survey has for years been a safety performance and incentive/award program aimed to foster safe practices at ready mixed concrete plants across the nation. The Safety Contest & Benchmarking Survey is a per-plant contest open to all facilities operated by NRMCA member companies in good standing in 2018. Companies with more than one division are encouraged to distribute entry blanks to individuals responsible for keeping safety records at each plant location.
