Fact: people quit because they have serious issues with their immediate supervisor. In an environment where our industry cannot lose one more mixer driver, it is critical that plant, operations, dispatch, fleet and driver managers, and supervisors understand the scope and tasks they are expected to execute. To stress the importance even more, according to the U.S. Department of Labor the most common business lawsuit filed is by employees against their employers - and the employees cite their direct supervisors as the cause. Therefore, the class content includes industry-specific, hands-on exercises to develop solid procedures to increase efficiency and profitability by using better business processes and communication methods with front line employees.

This class is held just once a year. Dates are January 14-16 in Des Moines.

Pavement

NRMCA Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge recently participated in the Large Volume Concrete in the Carolinas seminar in Charleston, SC, co-hosted by the Carolinas Ready Mixed Concrete Association (CRMCA) and the American Concrete Institute's (ACI) Carolinas Chapter. Kresge’s presentation, Designing Concrete Parking Lots with ACI 330, kicked off the event and was well received. As part of the presentation, Kresge highlighted the PaveAhead website and the Design Assistance Program (DAP) for pavement. Wilson Taylor, Jr., vice president of NRMCA Producer member Van-Smith Concrete Company, spoke of the success his company has had with DAP and encouraged attendees to take advantage of the free service.

Other topics in the seminar included Trouble Shooting Concrete Failures, Concrete Maturity Testing, Mass Concrete Thermal Control Plans and Practices and A Producer’s Perspective on Mass Concrete and Performance Based Concrete Specifications. The event was organized by CRMCA’s Director of Business Development and Education Jessica Palmer along with Taylor who is currently serving as president of the ACI chapter. Approximately 35 engineers, specifiers and contractors were in attendance.

Learning & Development

If you are a NRMCA Developing Industry Leaders (DIL) alumnus or almumna, there is an opportunity for you to mentor one of this year’s six groups. Each cohort will work on a project over the winter months; projects tie directly back to one of NRMCA’s committees. DILs will report their results to their assigned committee at the annual convention in March 2020 in Las Vegas.

While each group of five people works with the NRMCA staff person responsible for a specific committee, the DILs would gain additional perspective tapping into alumni’s experience. The committees with DIL groups this year are:

  • Government Affairs
  • Promotion - Build with Strength
  • Promotion – Sustainability
  • Safety Environment and Operations (SEO)
  • Research Engineering & Standards (RES)
  • Workforce Development

If you would like to volunteer to work with a specific group, please e-mail your committee choice to Eileen Dickson at edickson@nrmca.org before October 15.
