Engineering
NRMCA is offering its one-day course, Improving Concrete Quality, intended for concrete producers, ingredient material suppliers, engineers and testing labs online from April 19 to 21. Improved concrete quality can benefit all stakeholders in a concrete construction project. This course will answer some of the following questions:
The MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub (CSHub) is hosting a free public webinar tomorrow at 1 p.m. Eastern time titled Concrete's Greener Potential. MIT Professor Admir Masic will discuss how new functionalities in concrete can enable greener construction, presenting an overview of the research being conducted at the Masic Lab at MIT to create more sustainable, versatile concrete. Inspired by techniques of antiquity, Professor Masic and his team are investigating this crucial material’s nanomechanical properties to mitigate its environmental impacts and broaden its applications. Following an item in last week's E-NEWS, Denver area Realtor® Jim Smith has published two additional advertorials in The Denver Post over the last few weeks. The January 20 edition included another advertorial about concrete homes while the January 27 edition included a summary of PCA’s Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality. Smith also included a link to his company website where he has posted a link to the PCA Roadmap. Information was provided by Don Clem, NRMCA vice president, local paving. The three articles were a result of Post reader and former Holcim executive Peter Deem who reached out to Jim Smith and then connected him to NRMCA. For more information, contact Don Clem at dclem@nrmca.org.
Government Affairs
When the historic Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) was signed into law in November, the full benefits of the law required Congress to pass a full-year appropriation. In a win for the ready mixed concrete and construction industries, the IIJA authorized a 30% higher level of funding for state departments of transportation over FAST Act levels. However, this higher amount – representing nearly $9 billion in added funding – will not flow unless Congress directs it through an appropriations bill. NRMCA and a broad coalition of business and construction industry groups that worked toward passage of the IIJA sent a letter to Congress last week underscoring the importance of appropriations language unlocking the full benefit of the bipartisan infrastructure bill. In addition, NRMCA and NSSGA have conducted joint meetings with House and Senate Appropriations staff to ensure the industry’s voice is heard on this issue. A White House official spoke last week to the importance of a full-year appropriation to Department of Transportation staffing and implementing IIJA programs. Congressional staff are working on appropriations language ahead of the February 18 government spending deadline. NRMCA will continue to advocate for this critically important policy. NRMCA will hold the Certified Concrete Sales Professional class, Module 4: Professional Sales Skills and Promotion, online April 4 - 8. The curriculum is appropriate for mid-level staff where they learn to apply consultative, value-added selling methods in ready mixed concrete situations. As with face-to-face classes, it is expected attendees commit their time and effort to the class. Participants will need to practice time management, create a study space, stay organized and eliminate distractions for the entire week. In the end, the exam holds attendees accountable. For those working toward their NRMCA STEPS® CCPf certification in the Sales and Marketing Track, these are required classes. For others working toward CCPf certification in other STEPS® tracks, they can be applied as electives. Click here for more information, link for registration and staff contact. Calendar
