NRMCA recently partnered with the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the Washington Aggregates and Concrete Association (WACA) to deliver a course titled Safeguarding the Public with Concrete as part of the Washington Association of Building Officials (WABO) 2022 Annual Education Institute in Lynnwood. The day-long course included presentations and discussions on various concrete topics relating to public safety. Building officials are a key stakeholder to design innovations.

NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Doug O’Neill is partnering with his longtime industry colleague, Executive Director of the Connecticut Concrete Promotion Council Dominic DiCenzo, to present a Concrete Innovations webinar to the state chapter of the American Institute of Architects on Thursday, April 7, from noon to 1 p.m. Eastern time. The presentation looks into the tremendous advances in concrete technology over the past few years and also informs attendees about some interesting innovations on the horizon.

The Safety Contest & Benchmarking Survey has for years been a safety performance and incentive/award program aimed to foster safe practices at ready mixed concrete plants across the nation. The survey is a per-plant contest open to facilities operated by NRMCA member companies in good standing in 2021. Companies with more than one division are encouraged to distribute entry blanks to individuals responsible for keeping safety records at each plant location.

Entries must be e-mailed to safetycontest@nrmca.org by this Friday, April 1. Click here for more information and to download the entry form. The staff contact is Gary Mullings at gmullings@nrmca.org.

The 2022 Fleet Benchmarking Survey is filled out by industry fleet managers and/or financial managers early each year, based on data gathered from the previous calendar year’s performance. This year’s form includes new questions on mixer drum composition, idle time and types of fuel being used. The survey is used to establish industry benchmarking norms and procedures; information gathered is published in a full report in Concrete InFocus magazine each autumn. A shorter Executive Summary of the survey is also made available to all.

The deadline for e-mailing entries to fleetbenchmark@nrmca.org is Friday, April 22. Click here for more information and to download the entry form. The staff contact is Gary Mullings at gmullings@nrmca.org.

Southwest Airlines recently opened a new $100 million technical operations hangar facility at the Denver International Airport, reports Colorado-based NRMCA Vice President, Local Paving, Don Clem. The 130,000 square foot maintenance facility (seen here, photo courtesy of Southwest Airlines) and technical center can hold three Boeing 737s while the concrete pavement outside has room for eight additional 737s. The site will serve as the new home for over 100 DEN-based technical operations employees.

NRMCA provided design assistance for this complex jointing plan of the exterior concrete parking lot pavement to the civil consultant, HCL Engineering & Surveying, LLC.
