The next NRMCA Concrete Durability Course will be offered at the Holcim Northeast Regional Corporate Office in Middleton, MA (Boston area), from May 24 - 26. The course is taught by Michael Thomas of the University of New Brunswick, Kevin Folliard, University of Texas at Austin and NRMCA Engineering Staff. The course provides a fundamental understanding of the nature of cement and concrete as they relate to durability of concrete. Topics will cover cracking, alkali-aggregate reactions, sulfate attack, corrosion of reinforcing steel, freeze-thaw durability and other aspects. A group exercise will be facilitated to familiarize attendees with the NRMCA ConcreteWorks software used for mass concrete and service life prediction.
ASTM International is developing a standards roadmap aimed at facilitating more circular manufacturing. As part of this effort, it is asking manufacturers for feedback through a brief 15-minute survey. The survey aims to understand existing manufacturer sustainability goals and practices, and responses will help ASTM identify the needs and gaps in the current standards landscape. Please help build this roadmap by taking the survey. Buildings
Last week, NRMCA exhibited at the 11th Annual Spring Symposium hosted jointly by the New Jersey Chapters of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) and the Automatic Fire Alarm Association (AFAA). Shamim Rashid-Sumar, vice president, fire codes and standards, (seen here) and Derek Torres, project manager, concrete promotion, represented NRMCA at the symposium. The event brought together fire protection engineers, contractors and other fire safety professionals from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York to engage in industry discussions and continuing professional education. Shamim also presented Benefits and Fire Resistance Qualities of Concrete in Construction. The fire-safety focused SFPE NJ chapter and its membership were appreciative of the support from NRMCA and lots of interest was generated regarding ICF construction, particularly among insurance and risk professionals. Build With Strength, a coalition led by NRMCA, offers presentations to architects, engineers, and building and fire code officials as part of its education efforts to promote safety and resiliency and help place more concrete. Click here for more information on education programs related to fire safety or contact Shamim Rashid-Sumar at ssumar@nrmca.org. NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Chris Dagosta supported Build With Strength by presenting Concrete Innovations at Kansas State University's Olathe campus on April 7 for the 44th Annual Scholer Peterson Concrete Conference. Special thanks to Christy Martin with the Kansas Concrete Promotional Group for her assistance in making this a great event. Attendees (seen here during one of the presentations) included many NRMCA and Kansas state association member companies and other industry associations. For more information, contact Chris Dagosta at cdagosta@nrmca.org.

Government Affairs
The House of Representatives last week passed the bipartisan Resilient AMERICA Act, legislation to promote resilient construction, predisaster mitigation, and incentives for adoption and enforcement of stronger building codes. NRMCA applauds the House passage of this legislation and urges the Senate to take up and pass this important bill. The legislation builds on NRMCA’s efforts to advance resilient construction through grants and pilot programs at FEMA. NRMCA joined the members of the BuildStrong Coalition in sending a letter to Congress in support of the Resilient AMERICA Act. The NRMCA Government Affairs team engaged with legislation sponsors, communicating NRMCA’s support in the days leading to the vote on the House floor. The Resilient AMERICA Act was drafted and introduced by ready mixed concrete champions, including House Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman Peter DeFazio (D-OR), Ranking Member Sam Graves (R-MO) and Dan Webster (R-FL).
