NRMCA recently verified a system-level Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) program for Producer member Duke City Redi-Mix in New Mexico. The EPD was developed in consultation with and based on a software tool by Athena Sustainable Materials Institute. The software tool integrates LCA impacts within batch operating software to generate EPDs when desired. The software, underlying life cycle data for each plant and EPD were reviewed and verified by Sustainable Solutions Corporation, a verifier in NRMCA’s EPD program.

Public access to the EPD is available on the NRMCA EPD webpage and is listed as NRMCA EPD: 20061 Duke City Redi-Mix. This EPD reports the impacts for ready mixed concrete from two plants in the Albuquerque market.

The Northern New England Concrete Association (NNECA) and Build With Strength recently co-sponsored a booth at the 13th Annual Maine Code Conference hosted by the Maine Building Officials & Inspectors Association in conjunction with the Maine Fire Chiefs’ Association. NNECA Executive Director Jon Kuell and NRMCA Vice President, Fire Codes and Standards, Shamim Rashid-Sumar (seen here) attended the event which was held in Phippsburg, ME. The conference brought together code officials and the fire safety community from across Maine as well as executives from the International Code Council and provided the concrete industry a venue to exhibit and promote fire safe concrete construction. Kuell reported the attendees represented the vast majority of the state’s population and visitors to the booth showed interest in ICF construction and non-combustible building materials.

“After meeting members of the education committee, we’ve identified a number of opportunities for the concrete industry to provide training and education to the code officials throughout the Northeast region,” Kuell said.

Build with Strength is a coalition led by NRMCA that offers presentations and other resources to architects, engineers, and building and fire code officials as part of its education efforts to promote safety and resiliency and help place more concrete. The second edition of the Guide to Concrete Overlays of Asphalt Parking Lots-2022 is now complete and a link to download a PDF file of the document will soon be available, said NRMCA Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Jon Hansen. He added that based on experience there will also be a demand for printed copies for convenient usage in the field.

"In the next month, we will order printed copies and, as in the past, we will offer them at initial bulk cost," Hansen said. "They will have the same quality used in printing the Guide to Concrete Trails. We anticipate the cost per copy to be about $6.50 plus shipping costs, but we will confirm that prior to ordering. What we need now is a response from those that anticipate wanting printed copies of this latest parking lot overlay guide."

Please contact Jon Hansen at jhansen@nrmca.org with the number of copies you anticipate ordering so he can negotiate the best initial bulk order price. Once a final price is determined, you will be contacted for confirmation. Please note that a response IS NOT a commitment to order. Any questions, you may also contact Jon.
