NRMCA Director, Building Innovations, Brandon Wray will take part in an August 25 climate action and resilient design webinar hosted by the American Institute of Architects' California chapter. Wray will join Evan Reis of the US Resiliency Council (USRC) to discuss a recent USRC study in which the performance of various structural systems were assessed after being subjected to earthquakes of varying intensities. Functional recovery time is often an underrepresented criterion of consideration when selecting a structural system. When (not if) the big one comes, the impacts of repair/rebuild will have massive economic and sustainability implications, but more importantly, displaced populations will be hit particularly hard. These impacts will unfortunately be weighted heavily toward low income and multifamily housing where FEMA P58-based displacement periods have the potential to be upward of 6 to 9+ months for some materials while concrete structures can be 1 to 2 weeks. We have the power to build it once and build it right when we Build With Strength. Click here for more information and to access a registration link. Justin McCain has joined NRMCA as director, building innovations, covering Texas and Oklahoma. Based in the Dallas area, Mr. McCain’s primary goal is to promote concrete as the primary structural system and building material for buildings. He will accomplish this by building awareness of advanced concrete technologies while connecting the design community to NRMCA’s in-house design assistance programs. Prior to joining NRMCA, he worked in the heavy civil construction industry for 15 years, beginning his career with the Washington State Department of Transportation and then with various general contractors. As a construction manager, he delivered complex underground infrastructure, tunnels, roadways and site development projects for commercial buildings and schools. The majority of his contracting experience has utilized alternative project delivery methods, principally Design-Build. McCain's experience with ready mixed concrete includes drilled shafts, cast-in-place walls, bridge decks, roadways, building foundations and shotcrete. His most recent projects include a $30 million 60-inch storm drain interceptor and outfall in downtown Tacoma, WA, and a 30-foot diameter tunnel, roadway and utilities for the $1.2 billion Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. Mr. McCain’s transition into the concrete industry expands upon his experience successfully delivering civil engineering projects, all of which have incorporated ready mixed concrete in different capacities. Justin McCain can be reached at jmccain@nrmca.org or 253-228-6295.
NRMCA and Build With Strength recently held a popular and heavily attended webinar titled Specifying Sustainable Concrete hosted by Structure magazine, a publication by the National Council of Structural Engineering Associations (NCSEA). The event set a record for the publication with more than 1,300 registrants and nearly 800 attendees listening as NRMCA Executive Vice President, Engineering, Colin Lobo and NRMCA Director, Building Innovations, Brandon Wray discussed the benefits of performance-based specifications on sustainable design. The event was largely attended by members of the structural engineering community in which sustainable design considerations are becoming a common occurrence. Build With Strength is turning out to be a valuable industry resource for education and design assistance as engineering firms are being tasked with lowering the embodied impact of structural materials while also providing a structural system that can improve the operational efficiency of the building, Wray said. From the event, the Build With Strength team has already begun numerous specification reviews for a number of large design firms throughout the country. Senior Vice Presidents of Local Paving Jon Hansen and Phil Kresge recently completed two Parking Lot Boot Camps within a 3-week period. “Success breeds success,” Hansen reports. “When one contractor sees what another is doing, wondering what he knows that I don’t know, the answer was Parking Lot Boot Camp.” Both Boot Camps were conducted in the same region of the country during the weeks of July 27 and August 9, with both contractors primarily interested in learning the latest information on concrete overlays of existing asphalt parking lots. As one contractor commented during his Boot Camp, “During these times when I might not get enough concrete daily to do a full depth industrial parking lot, I probably can get enough to do an overlay, which keeps my crews working full days.” For more information about Parking Lot Boot Camps, contact any member of the Pave Ahead/local paving team. The print copies of the Guide to Concrete Overlays of Asphalt Parking Lots - second edition have been received from the printer and are being packaged for shipment, reports Jon Hansen, senior vice president, local paving, and contributing author of the guide. “For those that ordered pre-print copies, your shipments are being prepared and will ship within the next week. Once those orders are fulfilled, there will be a limited stock left for those that wish to purchase a small quantity of copies,” Hansen said. For more information, contact Jon Hansen at jhansen@nrmca.org. Learning & Development
