NRMCA’s Member2Member Benefit Program (M2M) has added two new companies from the ranks of Associate members, volumetric mixer truck manufacturer Holcombe CVI and fuel and fleet management company Link2Pump.
Holcombe CVI’s partnership with you begins with the careful selection from Holcombe’s lineup of volumetric concrete mixers. While their volumetric concrete mixers have more standard features than any other mobile concrete mixer on the market, and their exclusive patented removable conveyor system allows for belt changes in as little as 5 hours, a Holcombe Mixer is much more than its technology. Holcombe is offering NRMCA members a $2,000 discount off the purchase of Holcombe Volumetric Concrete Mixers.

Three architects are ensuring that new buildings on the campus of the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) campus continue the legacy of innovative concrete construction. Architect magazine Editor-in-Chief Paul Makovsky discusses prominent examples of concrete architecture on the UCSD campus with Matthew Smith, architect for UC San Diego Capital Program Management. He then explores new concrete projects with the architects who designed them: the East Campus Office Building and Triton Ballpark with Tom Heffernan, AIA, LEED AP, a principal, co-managing director, and licensed architect at Gensler San Diego, and the Spanos Athletic Performance Center with Sean Chen, AIA, a principal at Architects Hanna Gabriel Wells. The discussion covers the economical, energy-efficient, and durable qualities of tilt-up building sessions. “Could concrete be explored in a way that was evocative of the landscape of San Diego, this kind of duality between a really rustic landscape … and a more refined landscape?” Heffernan asks, remembering the early stages of design when tilt-up was first under consideration. Project walk-throughs and a Q&A paint a picture of how the architects landed on tilt-up and how the buildings have been received by the university community. Build With Strength New Mexico, in collaboration with the Las Cruces Home Builders Association, the Insulating Concrete Forms Manufacturers Association, KT Homes, Nudura, ICF Warehouse and NRMCA hosted an Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) installation training event on August 25 in Las Cruces. The following day, Nudura hosted its own installation training showcasing the product. The focus of these events was to educate the students of Organ Mountain High School on the benefits and opportunities of ICF construction. Between 20 to 25 people (seen here) were in attendance for both days. The training aimed to publicize the benefits of ICF construction throughout the construction industry. ICFs are quickly becoming the method of choice for all forms of construction due to attributes such as speed and safe construction, operation maintenance and energy savings, resilience, sound control and building insurance discounts. These benefits are creating ICF project demand by helping to deliver a knowledgeable contractor workforce that can augment its portfolio of construction services. Engineers, contractors and builders were in attendance and learned alongside the high school students. Build With Strength thanks the sponsors, including Nudura, KT Homes, the Las Cruces Home Builders Association, NRMCA and ICF-MA. Build With Strength has recently partnered with ICF-MA and launched ICF contractor training. The training is driven locally by NRMCA state affiliates and targets concrete contractors, framers, masons and other trades who will learn the techniques to expand their construction services portfolio and be more competitive in today’s construction environment. As part of the Build With Strength campaign, NRMCA promotes sustainable concrete solutions for buildings. For more information, contact Derek Torres at dtorres@nrmca.org or 973-876-0938.

The 2022 Mixer Driver Recruitment and Retention Survey Report and Executive Summary can now be accessed and downloaded on NRMCA’s website. The 114-page full report covers separation, turnover and related trends, basic demographic data, staffing levels and retention rates. It also analyzes recruitment methods, hiring rates, their trends and challenges. The full report breaks down data by region and company size over a five-year period. The 14-page Executive Summary analyzes five-year national trends. This year’s key finding revealed the industry followed the U.S. workforce 2021 trend, dubbed the “Year of the Great Resignation.” While the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the national quit rate at 25%, the ready mixed concrete industry had a 28% mixer driver quit rate. The turnover rate increased for the fifth year, this year to 38.2%. We cannot thank the 166 (anonymous) companies enough for helping us produce a report that collected stats on 29% of our mixer driver population. General or specific survey insights are most welcome. Please reach out to Eileen Dickson. Calendar
