Build With Strength (BWS), in collaboration with the Connecticut Concrete Promotion Council (CCPC), attended the Connecticut Architecture Conference & Expo at the Hotel Marcel, the country’s first net zero hotel (seen here). This annual event, hosted earlier this month by the Connecticut chapter of the American Institute of Architects, invites architects and designer professionals to learn about innovations and policies that shape the future of architecture in Connecticut. NRMCA's and Build With Strength's Shamim Rashid-Sumar (seen here) presented The Balanced Approach to Fire Safety: How Concrete Buildings Can Reduce Risk while Rashid-Sumar's colleague Derek Torres of Build With Strength and Dominic Di Cenzo of CCPC manned an exhibition booth to offer their design and educational services. NRMCA and BWS thanks Di Cenzo of CCPC for donating Zeolli concrete bowties along with concrete-cast miniature replicas of Hotel Marcel to some lucky participants. Build with Strength offers webinars and courses to architects, engineers, and building and fire code officials as part of its education efforts to promote safety and resiliency and help place more concrete. NRMCA and Build With Strength will host a Low-Carbon Concrete Rountable on Thursday, November 17, in Omaha, NE. NRMCA's Brandon Wray and Chris Dagosta will discuss why addressing embodied carbon in the built environment is important and what steps can the developer, AEC, and local concrete industry take to reduce concrete’s carbon footprint. Please consider joining them for a morning of education, discussion and Click here to register for this free event. For more information, contact Brandon Wray at bwray@nrmca.org or Chris Dagosta at cdagosta@nrmca.org. NRMCA and Build With Strength recently held a webinar titled The Top 10 Ways to Reduce Concrete’s Carbon Footprint for Jacobs, a global engineering group with over 55k employees. Attendees of the event heard NRMCA Executive Vice President, Structures and Sustainability, Lionel Lemay and NRMCA Director, Building Innovations, Brandon Wray discuss sustainability strategies and benefits of concrete. The event was largely attended by members of the structural engineering community in which sustainable design considerations are becoming a common occurrence. Jacobs specifically is gearing up to join the SE 2050 Commitment in which firms are challenged to transform the practice of structural engineering through prioritizing the reduction of embodied carbon of structural materials. Joining the SE 2050 Commitment requires that participating firms submit an Embodied Carbon Action Plan (ECAP) which articulates how the firm will achieve its sustainability goals through education, reporting, reduction and advocacy. Build With Strength continues to help the design community establish and pursue these goals through an improved understanding and use of concrete. For more information, contact Brandon Wray at bwray@nrmca.org. NRMCA recently verified a system-level Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for NRMCA Materials Division member Lehigh Cement. This latest EPD follows several verified for Lehigh Cement this year; because this verification comes less than six months after Lehigh Cement’s latest EPD verification, Lehigh was able to take advantage of NRMCA’s Level 2 hourly rate of $300/hour for members ($450/hour for nonmembers). Find more information about NRMCA’s EPD program fees on our webpage. The EPDs were developed in consultation with Athena Sustainable Materials Institute and based on a software tool created by the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA). The underlying life cycle data for each plant and EPDs were reviewed and verified by EcoForm, a verifier in NRMCA’s EPD program. For more information, contact Matthew Lemay at mlemay@nrmca.org.
