NRMCA is pleased to announce the appointment of Greg Halsted as its senior director, local paving, for the Western Region, effective February 16, 2023. Mr. Halsted, who had recently been on the Pavements and Geotechnical staff with the Portland Cement Association (PCA), will be responsible for increasing the paving market share for ready mixed concrete products through promotion, design, technical services and construction activities at the local, regional and state level. He has over 25 years of experience in the use of cement and concrete in the pavements and geotechnical industry.

The Regional Concrete Technology Training and Certification Program (Technical Short Course) held in early February in Orlando was attended by 40 industry personnel (seen here) at the Florida Concrete Products Association (FCPA). Besides the NRMCA Engineering Division Staff, guest speakers included Terry Harris with GCP Applied Technologies who discussed chemical admixtures and Mike Davy with ARGOS-USA speaking on quality control procedures. The NRMCA Concrete Technologist Level 2 Certification was awarded to 25 individuals and 20 achieved the Level 3 Certification. Brandon Coble with CalPortland Company (CA) achieved the highest score of 100% on the Level 2 exam while Brandon Weaver with Lauren Concrete (TX) obtained the high score of 93% on the Level 3 exam. The support and sponsorship of FCPA and Heidelberg Materials for providing PCA reference text and the NRMCA super sponsors (Euclid, Master Builders Solutions and Sika) are appreciated. NRMCA’s Think First monthly safety initiatives feature different industry-specific safety items relevant to seasons, current topics or industry concerns. The initiatives are meant to be shared, used as a training tool, printed, posted or distributed; all of which are encouraged. This month’s issue, shown here, is titled Tire Safety – Where the Rubber Meets the Road for the Concrete Delivery Professional. The NRMCA’s Annual Safety Award acknowledges the significant contribution that safe work practices gives to the growth and success of individual companies and the ready mixed concrete industry as a whole. The NRMCA Annual Safety Award is presented to an individual or company whose actions represent the very highest in the advancement of safety in the ready mixed concrete industry. The award program is generously sponsored by the Truck Mixer Manufacturers Bureau. The deadline to submit nominations is Friday, June 23.
NRMCA’s Commitment to Environmental Excellence Awards competition offers producers national recognition for outstanding contributions to protecting the environment and maintaining sound management practice in their operations. The program salutes companies that have not only met, but surpassed governmental compliance measures and demonstrated a commitment to environmental excellence through plant and staff investment. NRMCA member companies producing ready mixed concrete from a fixed plant location in the U.S., its territories or Canada are eligible to enter. Awards will be determined upon individual plant merits. Winning entrants will be honored at the Awards Ceremony at NRMCA‘s ConcreteWorks this October in Nashville, TN. Winners will also be featured in a 2023 edition of NRMCA’s Concrete InFocus magazine along with leading trade publication Concrete Products. Build With Strength’s Director, Building Innovations, Brandon Wray, recently presented The Top 10 Ways to Reduce Concrete’s Carbon Footprint alongside Alana Guzzetta and Juan Gonzalez of NRMCA Producer member Central Concrete, a subsidiary of Vulcan Materials Company. The event took place in STUDIOS’ San Francisco office and was virtually joined by the firm's Los Angeles, New York City and Washington, DC, offices for a total of 60 architects participating. STUDIOS is known for work in the iconic and sustainable structures space involving such projects as the Googleplex and LinkedIn’s Middlefield Campus. Wray said thoughtful discussions highlighted the importance and value of engaging the concrete industry early in the design process in order to put a project’s best foot forward as it pertains to sustainability.
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Leadership Summit in Washington, DC, wrapped up with a Large States Meeting and dinner at Clyde’s Restaurant, reports NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Frank Mruk who is seen here at right along with with AIA National 2024 President Kimberly N. Dowdell (center) and AIA National Director at Large, Illya Azaroff (at left). The AIA summit brings together AIA volunteer leaders, chapter executives and chapter staff across regions; this year’s theme, Architecture’s Generations at Work, focused on building bridges. The AIA Large States dinner was focused on sharing experiences from the day’s Resilient America Act lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill which seeks to invest in community resilience before disaster strikes. The Workforce Development Committee will meet at the NRMCA Annual Convention, Saturday, March 11, at the Encore, Las Vegas, NV. A lot of work has been done regarding mixer driver recruitment. We will share it with you at that time. The committee's second spring meeting will be its annual working meeting, April 25 - 26 in Chicago at the Hilton Chicago O’Hare Airport Hotel. When completing your rsvp to the Chicago meeting, note the link to a discounted sleep room at the Hilton (the site of the meeting). The hotel is a 10-minute walk from O’Hare Terminals 1, 2 and 3 via an underground walkway. Also, when making your flight reservations, please note we will start the committee meeting at 1 p.m. on April 25. There will be a group dinner on April 25; you will be billed afterward for the meal (alcohol will be pay-as-you-go). The second day's meeting (April 26) will end at noon.
