Association & Industry News

Concrete Credentials, an NRMCA podcast hosted by NRMCA Executive Vice President and Chief Communications Officer Gregg Lewis, AIA, LEED AP, covers all things concrete. From design to development to construction, Gregg welcomes guests to discuss industry news, innovation and a range of topics that highlight the many benefits of using concrete in our building projects.

This week, NRMCA is spotlighting a Season 3 episode of the podcast titled How NRMCA Supports and Elevates the Industry - Build With Strength that featuries former NRMCA Board Chairman and president of the Concrete Supply Company Henry Batten. In his conversation with Gregg, Henry shares key insights on the value of NRMCA’s education courses, performance benchmarking surveys and various other member services. He also shares what active engagement within the association means to him and important takeaways from his time at NRMCA.

NRMCA encourages member companies to share this podcast with nonmember companies as a valuable recruitment tool. For more information, contact Gregg Lewis at glewis@nrmca.org.

The next NRMCA Concrete Durability Course will be offered at the Tennessee Concrete Association office in Antioch, TN (Nashville area) from May 16 - 18. The course is taught by Kevin Folliard of the University of Texas at Austin, Anton Schindler of Auburn University and NRMCA Engineering Staff. It provides a fundamental understanding of the nature of cement and concrete as they relate to durability of concrete in a wide range of exposures. Topics will cover cracking, alkali-aggregate reactions, sulfate attack, corrosion of reinforcing steel, freeze-thaw durability and other aspects. The general durability mechanism is discussed along with developing mixtures to minimize the problem and associated tests to measure potential durability.

The Safety Contest & Benchmarking Survey has for years been a safety performance and incentive/award program aimed to foster safe practices at ready mixed concrete plants across the nation. The survey is a per-plant contest open to facilities operated by NRMCA member companies in good standing in 2022. Companies with more than one division are encouraged to distribute entry blanks to individuals responsible for keeping safety records at each plant location.

Entries must be e-mailed to safetycontest@nrmca.org by Friday, April 7. Click here for more information and to download the entry form. The staff contact is Gary Mullings.

The 2023 Fleet Benchmarking Survey is filled out by industry fleet managers and/or financial managers early each year, based on data gathered from the previous calendar year’s performance. This year’s form includes new questions on mixer drum composition, idle time and types of fuel being used. The survey is used to establish industry benchmarking norms and procedures; information gathered is published in a full report in NRMCA's Concrete InFocus magazine each autumn. A shorter Executive Summary of the survey is also made available to all.

The deadline for e-mailing surveys to fleetbenchmark@nrmca.org is Friday, April 21. Click here for more information to download the entry form. The staff contact is Gary Mullings.

Build With Strength Senior Director, Building Innovations, Patrick Matsche and James Baty, FACI, FTCA, recently presented virtually to the design build team at Resin Architects, Idaho’s premier architectural firm which describes itself as driving creative solutions, leveraging technology and innovation to push the boundaries for “out-of-the-box” solutions.

Build With Strength’s Concrete Design Center created a costing and building systems report covering multiple concrete solutions for an upcoming project to be built in the Idaho Falls market. Matsche and Baty encouraged a free flow of questions and provided resources, along with citing multiple examples of concrete’s flexibility to create complex design elements while being a cost effective, energy efficient and resilient building solution for current and future projects.

NRMCA recently verified a system-level Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) program for Washington-based Producer member Miles Sand & Gravel. The EPD was developed in consultation with Climate Earth and based on its ClimateCLARITY software tool. The tool integrates LCA impacts within batch operating software to generate EPDs when desired. The software tool and the underlying life cycle data for the plant and EPD were reviewed and verified by Industrial Ecology consultants, a verifier in NRMCA’s EPD program. Public access to the EPD is available on the NRMCA EPD webpage and is listed as NRMCA EPD: 20085 Miles Sand & Gravel. This EPD reports the impacts for ready mixed concrete from one plant in Burlington, WA.
