Association & Industry News
NRMCA is seeking individuals to serve on the Board of Directors. While serving on the Board requires both commitment and energy, it is a rewarding opportunity to give back to the industry. NRMCA represents a broad range of ready mixed concrete companies across the United States and our success is a direct result of the skills and expertise of our professional staff working in conjunction with our Board members.

The American Concrete Institute's Spring 2023 Convention was held between April 1 - 6 in San Francisco. What follows is a summary of relevant committee activity involving NRMCA staff.
132 – Responsibilities in Concrete Construction – The committee published ACI PRC-132.2-22: Responsibility in Concrete Rehabilitation Construction – Guide that is available from ACI. The committee planned speakers and responsibility focus areas on cracking. Speakers representing different stakeholder groups have been selected for a two-session event at an upcoming convention. The committee has reviewed its primary document on responsibilities in concrete construction, compiled substantial comments and working in its revised version. Colin Lobo maintains representation on ACI 132.

NRMCA, the ICF Manufacturers Association (ICFMA), and Ohio Concrete recently partnered with Allied Construction Industries, an Ohio-based workforce training organization, to offer ICF education and training to over 75 contractors and vocational students in Cincinnati. The all-day contractor roundtable on April 4 featured morning presentations that included a Build With Strength overview of ICF commercial construction as well as testimonials from a design/build ICF developer and a general contractor of largescale ICF facilities. A tour of a new 5-story hotel being built with Fox Blocks ICFs was also conducted, followed by a full afternoon ICFMA installers training program, reports NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Donn Thompson. Interest in the credentialed ICF training from other Ohio school districts has led to ongoing discussions among participating organizations to look at additional student events throughout Ohio. The program can potentially serve as a model for similar vocational training for future ICF installers in other locations in the U.S. For more information on the ICFMA installers training, contact Derek Torres at dtorres@nrmca.org. Donn Thompson can provide more information on Build With Strength activities in the Midwest.
Build With Strength’s Senior Director, Building Innovations, Chris Dagosta; Senior Vice President, Codes and Standards, Shamim Rashid-Sumar and Robert Klob, president of Robert Klob Designs, presented to the Colorado Chapter of the International Code Council last week in Louisville, CO, promoting building safety. Dagosta introduced the basics of insulated concrete forms, including construction steps and installation methods looked for during inspections, while Rashid-Sumar focused on code compliance of fire and safety of ICFs. Robert Klob then covered architectural planning, design and code clarification. The audience of 60 chapter members (many seen here) were very engaged and asked a lot of questions, Dagosta reported. For more information, contact Christ Dagosta at cdagosta@nrmca.org. NRMCA’s Commitment to Environmental Excellence Awards competition offers producers national recognition for outstanding contributions to protecting the environment and maintaining sound management practice in their operations. The program salutes companies that have not only met, but surpassed governmental compliance measures and demonstrated a commitment to environmental excellence through plant and staff investment. NRMCA member companies producing ready mixed concrete from a fixed plant location in the U.S., its territories or Canada are eligible to enter. Awards will be determined upon individual plant merits. Winning entrants will be honored at the Awards Ceremony at NRMCA‘s ConcreteWorks this October in Nashville, TN. Winners will also be featured in a 2023 edition of NRMCA’s quarterly magazine, Concrete InFocus and Concrete Products. Entries and photos must be e-mailed to gmullings@nrmca.org by Friday, July 21.
