The annual nomination period for NRMCA's Developing Industry Leaders Program (DIL) closes on Monday, May 1. There are a few spaces still open to nominate your rising star(s). Once selected, DILs meet virtually throughout the year to work on their assigned projects. They will be required to attend ConcreteWorks in Nashville, TN, September 29 - October 3 to meet face-to-face. They will present their findings at the March 2024 NRMCA Annual Convention. During their second year, DILs attend a two-day, networking and leadership workshop facilitated by an executive coach. They may also attend NRMCA’s semi-annual Board of Directors' meetings to watch senior level executives deliberate and make both short- and long-term strategic decisions that impact the industry. Click here to download the application and further instructions. For more information, contact Eileen Dickson at edickson@nrmca.org.
The next Concrete Innovations session will focus on innovative pavement systems that positively impact the cost, environment, opening time and ease of construction. Discussion will center on the life cycle of pavements, their greenhouse gas emissions and the potential for reducing these emissions by involving multiple stakeholders in the design, materials and asset management of pavements. We will also use case studies to demonstrate how to lower the environmental impacts of concrete pavements. Speakers include: • Innovations in Concrete Pavements - Brian Killingsworth, executive vice president, NRMCA • The Role of US Pavement Life Cycle in Decarbonization - Hessam Azarijafari, deputy director, MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub • Opportunities to Optimize the Carbon Footprint of Concrete Pavements - Lori Tiefenthaler, senior director, marketing, Heidelberg Materials Register now for Concrete Innovations Learning Session 11, being held Wednesday, May 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern time and visit www.concreteinnovations.com for upcoming sessions. Earlier this month, NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Frank Mruk participated in a celebratory reception commemorating the launch of a Mutual Recognition Agreement for Architects between the United Kingdom and the United States at the British Ambassador Dame Karen Pierce's residence in Washington, DC. This historic agreement allows U.S. architects to practice in the UK and British architects to practice in the U.S. Seen here, left to right, are Phil Allsopp, CEO of ORBIS Dynamics; Catherine Clark, president RIBA US; Alan Moreton, RIBA; Catherine Davis, councillor RIBA; Frank Mruk, Harriet Harris, dean, Pratt Institute School of Architecture and Emily Grandstaff-Rice, president of the American Institute of Architects. Build With Strength program is a leader in supporting architects at the cutting edge of practice. For more information, contact Frank Mruk at fmruk@nrmca.org. NRMCA recently verified system-level Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for California-based NRMCA Producer member Robertson’s Ready Mix, Texas-based NRMCA Producer member Ingram Ready Mix and Indiana-based producer Milestone Contractors LP.
EPDs for Robertson’s Ready Mix and Ingram Ready Mix were developed in consultation with and based on the ClimateCLARITY software tool by Climate Earth. The EPD for Milestone Contractors was developed in consultation with and based on the Theta Concrete LCA Calculator by WAP Sustainability. Both software tools were reviewed and verified by Industrial Ecology Consultants. All EPDs were verified by Ecoform, a verifier in NRMCA’s EPD program. Click here for the NRMCA EPD webpage. For more information on the EPD verification program, contact Matthew Lemay at mlemay@nrmca.org.
Over 360 construction professionals attended an NRMCA-sponsored online presentation last week titled The Environmental Impacts of Building Materials – Comparing Concrete, Wood, and Steel, reports NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations Donn Thompson. The program addressed various critical issues that designers should consider when evaluating the environmental impacts of building materials for their projects. Thompson and his colleague Frank Mruk - both working under the Build With Strength banner, outlined the importance of looking beyond just the sustainability of material acquisition, production and delivery to the construction site. Instead, they stressed that aspects of performance over a project’s full life, including effects on energy consumption during operation as well as end of life considerations, should be examined in determining the most appropriate material choices for lasting value. An online recorded version of the program is available through Hanley Wood University and can be accessed by registering here. Architects, builders, contractors and other construction professionals can fulfill professional training requirements through the Hanley Wood site. There are now 10 online Build With Strength continuing education offerings focused on various ready mixed concrete topics. For more information on last week’s program, contact Frank Mruk at fmruk@nrmca.org or Donn Thompson at dthompson@nrmca.org. The Florida Concrete & Products (FC&PA) recently invited college students throughout the state to enter a contest explaining the benefits of concrete paving. The resulting one- to three-minute videos were then judged based on quality, title, spirit, video likes and number of views. This is the first year FC&PA held the competition. Winners include: For more information on the competition or videos, contact Karl Dunkelman at kdunkelman@fcpa.org or Amanda Hult at ahult@nrmca.org. Pavement
NRMCA's Pave Ahead program hosted a booth at the International Trails Summit held earlier this month in Reno, NV. The summit, hosted by American Trails, is the largest gathering of all trail interests and occurs every two years to bring together trail and greenway advocates, managers, planners and users as well as tourism and business interests. This year’s event attracted over 900 attendees from 20 different countries who believe their combined voices are the best way to strengthen trails for everyone. NRMCA Directors, Local Paving, Greg Halsted, P.E., (seen here at left visiting with an attendee) and Don Clem, P.E., staffed the booth, meeting with prospective clients from all over the world. Clem and Halsted also hosted a Trail Talk presentation titled Design and Construction of Concrete Surfaced Trails. The informal, hour-long roundtable event attracted 28 attendees who came to learn about and share their experience with concrete surfaced trails. The CP Tech Center Guide to Concrete Trails was used as a basis for discussion and to provide design and construction information while also highlighting case studies. A special thanks goes to NRMCA Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge who developed materials specifically for this event and arranged for their delivery and return. The NRMCA Local Paving team is following up on leads generated from the summit. Click here to download a copy of the Guide to Concrete Trails. For more information, contact Don Clem at dclem@nrmca.org. NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Greg Halsted traveled to Layton, UT, on April 19 to speak as part of the 2023 Tri-Service Pavement-Transportation meeting, the largest annual gathering of Department of Defense pavement engineers. This year’s event gathered over 100 Army, Navy and Air Force attendees both in person and virtually. Halsted presented on Cement and Concrete Industry Updates, focusing on the Biden Administration’s Buy Clean policies and legislation, and how the concrete industry is leading in terms of EPDs, and efforts aimed at reducing concrete’s embodied carbon emissions. The presentation was part of a concrete, aggregate and asphalt industries update session and was well-received judging from a great deal of questions and discussion afterward. Halsted also introduced attendees to NRMCA’s Build With Strength and Pave Ahead initiatives and discussed how attendees could benefit from the education and design assistance these programs offer. For more information, contact Greg Halsted at ghalsted@nrmca.org. Registration is still open for this year’s Environmental Certification Course being held in Orlando, FL, November 28 - 30.
