Registration is now open for NRMCA's newly revised mixer driver certification program. The material focuses on the aspects of the job beyond driving a commercial vehicle, with this Concrete Delivery Professional (CDP) program emphasizing the professional, technical aspects of the job. The participant’s reward is a nationally recognized certification.
Build With Strength was recognized as a collaborating organization for the American Society of Civil Engineer’s (ASCE) 10th Biennial Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI) Conference, held in Denver, reports NRMCA Director, Building Innovations, Brandon Wray. The conference, titled Climate Conscientiousness and Resilience: The Need for Integrated Building Solutions, emphasized the need for architects and engineers to plan for the expected and unexpected impacts of climate change while exploring opportunities to deliver low-carbon and hazard resilient buildings for the future. Wray (seen here) presented Reducing Concrete's Carbon Impact alongside California Nevada Cement Association’s (CNCA) Technical Director Nathan Forrest. The presentation was well received with many designers in attendance expressing an immense amount of interest in leveraging concrete as a resilient and sustainable solution to the industry’s climate aspirations. In addition, Wray supported the U.S. Resiliency Council’s Evan Reis in his presentation, Resilient Design: Performance Assessment of Structural Materials. Together, these two concrete-focused topics reinforced the notion that sustainability and resilience are inextricably interconnected. The information put forward by ASCE and NRMCA continues to help the design industry navigate opportunities to leverage concrete as a preferred building material. NRMCA Vice President, Local Paving, Don Clem recently joined a host of industry colleagues in Denver for the annual Concrete Day, including Governor Jared Polis who signed a proclamation at the Capitol recognizing the event. Clem said Concrete Day 2023 was a resounding success, with many legislators and staffers on hand to enjoy a barbeque lunch grilled on site, providing concrete industry representatives the opportunity to visit with lawmakers regarding the importance of the concrete industry to the state’s economy. "The weather for the 12th annual event was perfect, partly sunny, and no wind," said Colorado Ready Mixed Concrete Association (CRMCA) Executive Director Todd Ohlheiser (seen here, flanked by Don Clem and Angela Folkestad). "We were very pleased with our member turnout which ensured an informative experience for lawmakers.” This highly anticipated event is co-sponsored by CRMCA, the Colorado/Wyoming Chapter of the American Concrete Pavement Association and the Colorado Chapter of the American Concrete Pipe Association. NRMCA’s Lionel Lemay (building promotion and sustainability) and his colleague Brian Killingsworth (paving promotion) participated in the American Society of Concrete Contractor (ASCC) committee meetings held last week in St. Louis. ASCC represents contractors who install ready mixed concrete projects from parking areas and streets to slabs on grade and structural framing systems. ASCC has several committees to address technical issues, safety and decorative concrete along with paving promotion. NRMCA will also participate on the newly formed ASCC Sustainability Committee and is exploring the formation of a building promotion committee.
Last week, NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Frank Mruk FAIA, attended the 40th annual Boston Society of Architecture College of Fellows celebration dinner and meeting at the St. Botolph Club. The fellowship is the American Institute of Architects' highest membership honor, bestowed upon only three percent of AIA members, for their exceptional work and contributions to architecture and society. Guest speakers (some shown here) were Eric Höweler FAIA, LEED AP, co-founder and partner at Höweler+Yoon; J. Meejin Yoon AIA, FAAR, co-founder and managing partner at Höweler+Yoon; and Gale and Ira Druiker Dean of the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP) at Cornell University. The event also celebrated the induction of five new fellows: Justin Crane, FAIA; Andrea Love, FAIA; Diana Nicklaus,FAIA; Ted Touloukian, FAIA and Angela Ward Hyatt, FAIA. Mruk said about 100 AIA Fellows attended the meeting. The Build With Strength program is a leader in supporting architects at the cutting edge of practice. For more information, contact Frank Mruk at fmruk@nrmca.org.
The next Concrete Innovations session will focus on innovative pavement systems that positively impact the cost, environment, opening time and ease of construction. Discussion will center on the life cycle of pavements, their greenhouse gas emissions and the potential for reducing these emissions by involving multiple stakeholders in the design, materials and asset management of pavements. We will also use case studies to demonstrate how to lower the environmental impacts of concrete pavements. Speakers include:

NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Greg Halsted assisted the Northwest Cement Council (NCC) in its exhibit booth at both the Washington and Oregon chapters of the American Public Works Association Spring Conferences. The two conferences, held the week of April 24 in Tacoma, WA, and the week of May 1 in Bend, OR, collectively attracted approximately 800 public works personnel, record attendance for both events. Attendees took part in over 50 technical sessions covering numerous tracks focused on all aspects of planning, design, construction, maintenance and sustainability. The NCC booth had a great deal of technical information on both cement and concrete applications for public works, including concrete overlays, cement-based pavement solutions, concrete trails, portland limestone cement and more. Traffic at the exhibit booth was lively, with numerous individuals stopping by for information or engaging in discussions about specific projects. Halsted also introduced attendees to NRMCA’s Build With Strength and Pave Ahead initiatives and discussed how attendees could benefit from the education and design assistance these programs offer. For more information, contact Greg Halsted at ghalsted@nrmca.org. Learning & Development
