NRMCA Spotlight
Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its long-awaited opinion in Sackett v. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which challenged the EPA’s authority to regulate wetlands and their connection to waters of the U.S. (WOTUS). NRMCA commends the court for ruling in favor of Sackett, which stated that EPA’s authority under the Clean Water Act (CWA) “extends to only those wetlands with a continuous surface connection to bodies that are ‘waters of the United States’ in their own right,” so that they are 'indistinguishable' from those waters.” The court effectively narrowed EPA’s WOTUS jurisdiction by asserting that for a water to be considered WOTUS, it must have a clear, continuous and indistinguishable connection to a traditional navigable water. This is counter to the current WOTUS definition issued by the Biden Administration which relies on EPA making a determination of wetlands and other waters simply being “adjacent” to WOTUS, but may not be clearly connected.

The Summer 2023 edition of NRMCA's quarterly magazine, Concrete InFocus, is now available online. The issue once again contains its quartet of regular columns, Build With Strength, Cement Side, Enviroscene and Pave Ahead, along with a full slate of industry-specific features, including the latest installment of the ongoing series Developing Industry Leaders and Innovations in Buildings. There's also a feature on the newly named Concrete Advancement Foundation along with an Industry Best Practices article submitted by NRMCA Producer member Heidelberg Materials and the development of a modern cement plant. But that's not all. The cover story highlights NRMCA's Deliver Your Future campaign aimed at strategically addressing the mixer driver shortage endemic to the U.S.

In late April, the Georgia Ready Mixed Concrete Association (GRMCA) hosted its inaugural “Day of Concrete” at NRMCA Producer member Vulcan Materials' training center in Kennesaw, GA. NRMCA’s Karthik Olba, vice president of technical services, and Build With Strength’s Frank Gordon, Assoc. AIA, senior director of building innovations, were two of the featured speakers. Obla discussed Performance-Based Specifications which focused on the importance of helping design professionals shift from prescriptive-based specifications to effectively achieve carbon-reduction goals while Gordon (seen here) presented Vertical Advantages: Ready Mixed Concrete for Multi-Family Residential and Educational Facilities, addressing market sector projects that are positioned to gain from using concrete structural systems (i.e., Insulated Concrete Forms and Insulated Tilt-Up).

NRMCA’s Commitment to Environmental Excellence Awards competition offers producers national recognition for outstanding contributions to protecting the environment and maintaining sound management practice in their operations. The program salutes companies that have not only met, but surpassed, governmental compliance measures and have demonstrated a commitment to environmental excellence through plant and staff investment.

NRMCA member companies producing ready mixed concrete from a fixed plant location in the U.S., its territories or Canada are eligible to enter. Awards will be determined upon individual plant merits. Winning entrants will be honored at the Awards Ceremony at NRMCA‘s ConcreteWorks this October in Nashville, TN. Winners will also be featured in a 2023 edition of NRMCA’s Concrete InFocus magazine and industry trade publication Concrete Products.

Each module of NRMCA's Certified Concrete Sales Professional (CCSP) series will be held in Denver - a “center of the country” location - beginning in October and ending in March 2024. A discounted fee is extended for those who register for all four classes. The schedule is as follows:

• Module 1: Concrete 101, October 17 - 20.
• Module 2: Understand the Contractor's Business, December 12 - 15
• Module 3: RMC Business Knowledge, February 13 - 15, 2024
