Jeremiah Lemons, vice president of CRH Americas Materials Northwest and Bruce Chattin, executive director at the Washington Aggregates & Concrete Association and the managing director of the Washington chapter of the American Concrete Institute, accepted Habitat for Humanity – Spokane, WA’s Partner in Innovation Award at the recently held Hope Builders Luncheon. NRMCA Senior Director Building Innovations, Patrick Matsche who also attended the event said “it was heartwarming and humbling to be a part of the initial build and to see the level of commitment from the ready mix community in support of such a worthy goal. NRMCA’s Build With Strength’s partnership with Producer members and Habitat for Humanity continues to build resilient, energy efficient and volunteer friendly homes across the U.S. The goal is for this partnership to help build at least 50 of houses in 50 states, Matsche said. Habitat for Humanity is currently working on six new affordable homes in Spokane County and H4H-Spokane has committed to building future homes utilizing Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs). H4H-Spokane Chief Operating Officer Eric Lyons said, “I will NEVER build a stick frame home again. We estimate that heating and cooling costs are going to be approximately $150 per year.” Seen here from left to right are John Shields, Interstate Concrete (CRH); Bill Traeger, AshGrove Cement (CRH); Pat Jennings, Interstate Concrete (CRH), Bruce Chattin, Washington Aggregate & Concrete Association; Jeremiah Lemons, CRH; NRMCA's Matsche and Eric Lyons, H4H-Spokane, WA. Build With Strength Director, Building Innovations, Justin McCain partnered with Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) manufacturer, Nudura at Houston Build Expo USA. The expo was held from June 28 - 30, at the city's NRG Convention Center and was attended by approximately 6,000 professionals from the construction, development and architectural community. Nudura and NRMCA sponsored a booth which promoted the use of concrete through building with ICFs and engaged with hundreds of attendees during the event, McCain said. There were several largescale developers who were very interested in building with concrete and moving away from timber-framed construction methods. The Build With Strength team also received much interest in utilizing the Concrete Design Center which helps select the right concrete structural systems for buildings that would have otherwise been constructed with other building materials. For more information on this event or other events regarding concrete promotion. contact Justin McCain at jmccain@nrcma.org. There is still time to place your order for NRMCA’s second printing of the Guide to Concrete Overlays of Existing Asphalt Parking Lots – Second Edition. Based on the number of copies ordered, the cost per copy is estimated to be $6.50 per copy, plus shipping. This guide has been one of the most successful and impactful industry publications to come from the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center. Funded by the Concrete Advancement Foundation (formerly the RMC Research & Education Foundation), it has resulted in the conversion of nearly 140,000 cubic yards at a value to the ready mixed concrete industry of $18.4M. “Our first printing was 1,200 copies,” said NRMCA Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge. “By my calculations, and through discussions with those who were part of that initial run, most of those copies have been distributed to our partners in the design and contracting communities. It continues to be an extremely popular and welcomed publication.” If you would like to order printed copies of the guide or for more information, contact Phil Kresge at pkresge@nrmca.org.
