The estimated ready mixed concrete produced in May is 37.3 million cubic yards, 4.3% higher than that in May 2022. The estimated production in the U.S. through May is 149 million cubic yards, approximately 2.3% lower than that during the same period in 2022. Ready mixed concrete production is estimated from cement shipments reported by the U.S. Geological Survey. More detail is available here for NRMCA members under Production Statistics.
Engineering
The NRMCA Research, Engineering and Standards (RES) Committee periodically updates technical publications as needed. The following topics in the Concrete in Practice (CIP) series have been revised:
The committee also developed and approved a new topic that discusses EPDs for concrete in a concise format applicable to the CIP series: What are EPDs, how are they developed, why and how are they used
CIP topics can be purchased in multiple copies of a single topic, single set of all topics or multiple collated sets of all topics. Printed CIPs are used by NRMCA members as a convenient and brief discussion of specific topics for distribution to users of ready mixed concrete. CIPs can be viewed and purchased here. For more information contact Jacques Jenkins. The Summer 2023 newsletter of the National Concrete Consortium includes the following items:
• Revisiting Concrete Scaling - An unusually high number of problems related to surface distress, often caused by several factors, have been reported this year. The Summer 2023 NC² Moving Advancements into Practice (MAP) Brief from the NC² Resource Library recommends actions to reduce the risk of these surface-related issues.

NRMCA’s Think First monthly safety initiatives feature different industry-specific safety items relevant to seasons, current topics or industry concerns. The initiatives are meant to be shared, used as a training tool, printed, posted or distributed, all of which are encouraged. This month’s topic, seen here, is Safety Around Sedimentation Pits at the Plant. Buildings
On July 27, the American Society of Civil Engineers hosted what it termed Lightning Talks on Sustainability, with topics that included conceptual understanding of climate change, sustainability and resilience as it relates to structural engineering; interacting with carbon metrics; reducing waste and carbon emissions in wastewater treatment facilities; sustainable and resilient bridges; sustainability and affordable housing; innovative concrete systems and zero energy schools; and sustainability and membrane structures. The panelists were Don Nguyen P.E., S.E., ENV SP of HDR Inc.; Jared Friedman, R.A. of Walter P. Moore; David Silverman P.E. of PSI Process and Equipment; Vlada Kennif. Ph.D of New York City Housing Authority; Nic Goldsmith of Silman - A TYLin Company and Frank Mruk, FAIA, LEED AP of NRMCA who spoke on decarbonization efforts in the education sector. Over 50 participants attended the event. The Build With Strength program is a leader in supporting the ASCE at the cutting edge of industry best practices. Pavement
NRMCA Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge recently gave a lunch and learn presentation at the Columbus, OH, offices of architectural/engineering firm GPD Group. The program was hosted by Ohio Concrete Association (OCA) Central/Southeast Promotion Director Lisa Weaver-Moon. Kresge’s presentation, Innovations in Concrete Pavement, highlighted some of the latest materials and technologies in the concrete pavement industry, including admixtures, fiber reinforcement and new jointing practices. Additionally, Kresge discussed the concrete industry’s latest sustainability efforts featuring the Portland Cement Association’s (PCA) Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality and NRMCA’s lead efforts with Environmental Product Declarations (EPD’s). The program was well received by attendees and was offered virtually for those who could not attend. With 13 offices across the country, GPD Group provides integrated architecture, engineering, planning and management services to public and private sector clients throughout the U.S. For more information, contact Phil Kresge at pkresge@nrmca.org. 2024 March 18 - 21, Tampa, FL March 26 - 28, Denver October 10 - 14, Aurora, CO Calendar
