NRMCA, through the Build With Strength initiative hosted a Low-Carbon Roundtable event on September 8 in Washington, DC. The event aimed at bringing design and build teams together to explore the current state of the Washington, DC, market and identify opportunities to collaborate on implementing low-carbon concrete solutions. Speakers included Lionel Lemay of NRMCA, Walter Tersch of the General Services Administration, Connor Rattey of the Green Building Council of Washington, DC, and Lauren Wingo of ARUP. Lauren also moderated a panel of experts, including Kate Williamson of Thornton-Tomasetti, Kahlil Francis from Skanska, Jim Martinoski of Miller & Long and Teck Chua of NRMCA Producer member Vulcan Materials to discuss how two large concrete projects in Washington, DC, achieved low-carbon concrete. The program ended with a feedback session from the attendees that included key owners, architects, engineers, contractors and producers. NRMCA organizes events like this all over the U.S. To find out more, contact Lionel Lemay at llemay@nrmca.org or 847-922-7995. ConcreteWorks
More than two dozen students from the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program will be on hand in Nashville, TN, at NRMCA’s ConcreteWorks later this month. Students from four of the five programs (in New Jersey, Texas, South Dakota and Middle Tennessee) will be taking part in the education programming, helping judge the National Mixer Driver Championship, visiting with attendees at the CIM booth in the exhibit hall and networking with the leaders of the ready mixed concrete industry. These students will be looking for summer internships or full-time placement after graduation, so it’s a great opportunity for members to meet these future industry leaders in a more casual environment and see if they would be a good fit for their organization. On Tuesday morning, the MTSU CIM Patrons have invited attendees to an open house to tour the new Concrete Industry Management building at Middle Tennessee State University (Murfreesboro, TN). Bus service will be provided for up to 55 attendees. There is no limit on attendees providing their own transportation. The bus will depart the Gaylord Opryland at 8:30 a.m. and returns to the hotel at noon (with a stop at the airport on the way back). RSVP to sally.victory@mtsu.edu if you would like to participate and please indicate if you will need transportation or will arrive on your own. Click here for complete ConcreteWorks details. For more information, contact Senior Director of Meetings Jessica Walgenbach.
Last week, NRMCA exhibited at Building Innovation 2023 hosted by the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) in Washington, DC. The annual conference brings together government agencies, architects, engineers, contractors and scientists among others to engage in discussions and work groups to improve the built environment. This year’s event focused on four major topics: Resilience, Technology, Building Performance and Sustainability, and Workforce. NRMCA/Build With Strength is an organizational member of NIBS and participates in NIBS’ councils on Industry Leadership, Disaster Preparedness and Building Performance as part of its codes and standards advocacy strategy. For more information on NRMCA/Build With Strength codes and standards advocacy efforts, contact Shamim Rashid-Sumar (shown here at the exhibit hall booth, with NRMCA/BWS colleague Frank Gordon at right) at ssumar@nrmca.org.
September is Suicide Prevention Month. In an effort to create additional awareness of this important topic, especially for suicide prevention within the construction industry, the Concrete Advancement Foundation last week published a Spotlight piece that includes a variety of details and resources for both companies and individuals. Of particular note are the resources available from the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention (CIASP) and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Hotline. The Foundation will also feature this topic as part of its Walk for Wellness taking place scheduled for Sunday, October 1, in conjunction with NRMCA’s ConcreteWorks 2023. For more information on the work of the Concrete Advancement Foundation, please contact Executive Director Julia Garbini, Senior Director Jennifer LeFevre or visit https://www.concreteadvancement.org/.
