NRMCA Director, Sustainability Codes and Standards, Tiffany Reed-Villarreal recently addressed members of the Virginia Ready Mixed Concrete Association at the VRMCA Fall Convention in Greenbrier, WV. She presented updates on NRMCA sustainability initiatives and advancements in sustainability codes and standards with a specific focus on the Concrete Product Category Rules (PCR) and the NRMCA Industry-Wide Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) Program. Reed-Villarreal (seen here at podium) highlighted NRMCA's ongoing efforts in refining the Concrete PCR, emphasizing the importance of accurate life cycle assessments, and encouraged members to participate in the EPD program. This program is important for establishing standards and providing industry-led environmental data for concrete products. The Safety, Environmental & Operations (SEO) Committee has unanimously named Mr. Byron Hunt, vice president of sales for Beck Industrial in Douglasville, GA, as the 2024 Joseph E. Carpenter Award recipient. The award is named in honor of Joseph E. Carpenter of Rinker Materials, West Palm Beach, FL, who was instrumental in the formation and early operation of the NRMCA Committee on Maintenance. The award was instituted in 1988 and is presented annually to persons who have demonstrated outstanding lifetime contributions to the ready mixed concrete industry in the fields of operations, environmental and safety. Mr. Hunt (seen here) was recognized for a life of service aimed toward improving concrete mixer safety and technology. He began his career with McNeilus and is a longtime valued member of the SEO Committee.He has been instrumental in building the business of three truck mixer manufacturers. Hunt is currently with Truck Mixer Manufacturers Bureau member Beck Industrial; he is a former TMMB chairman and has served on dozens of state and national boards of directors advocating for the needs of the ready mixed concrete industry. Mr. Hunt represents the best of our industry’s values and ethics. His longstanding commitment to continuous improvement of our operations, environmental, and safety standards are worthy of recognition and, as one committee member put it, “I always seem to feel better after talking to Byron than before.” The award will be presented to Mr. Hunt during NRMCA’s 2024 Annual Convention in Tampa, FL. NRMCA’s Think First monthly safety initiatives feature different industry-specific safety items relevant to seasons, current topics or industry concerns. The initiatives are meant to be shared, used as a training tool, printed, posted or distributed; all of which are encouraged. The October topic, shown here, was Preparing for a Concrete Plant OSHA Inspection. Last week, more than 40 attendees at a roundtable event co-sponsored by the Iowa Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) and NRMCA/Build With Strength learned about the ownership and construction benefits that insulating concrete forms (ICFs) provide to multifamily owners and contractors. The event was organized around the ongoing construction of The Lab, a downtown Des Moines mixed use project and one of the tallest buildings in the East Village area, where buildings top out within zoning restrictions designed to maintain uninterrupted views of the Iowa Capitol. The 7-story project features 110 studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments as well as 4,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor.
NRMCA once again joined forces with the American Concrete Pavement Association's (ACPA) Colorado/Wyoming Chapter in sponsoring a booth at the 9th Annual APWA Colorado Chapter Conference held last week in Golden, reports NRMCA Vice President, Local Paving, Don A. Clem, PE. The conference, titled Getting It Done, drew about 200 public works professionals from throughout Colorado. The program featured high-level presentations from public works leaders, including former Colorado Springs Mayor and current Colorado Attorney General John Suthers who presented Investing in Critical Infrastructure, an overview of how Colorado Springs voters passed several local measures to increase funding for water and transportation projects. The booth was staffed by Clem, Angela Folkestad, PE, executive director, and Sarah (Sanders) Dalton, PE, paving engineer, ACPA CO/ WY Chapter (shown here, from left to right, are Dalton, Folkestad, Jay Goldbaum, RockSol Consulting Group, Inc., and Clem). Copies of the Guide to Concrete Trails and the Guide to Concrete Overlays of Asphalt Parking Lots (both authored by the National CP Technology Center with funding provided by the Concrete Advancement Foundation) were provided to booth visitors, with several indicating upcoming potential concrete projects. On October 24, NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Frank Mruk discussed how building owners and contractors are prioritizing embodied carbon at the Western Pennsylvania Masters Builders Association's Embodied Carbon 201 event held in Pittsburgh. In addition to Mruk (seen here in front of podium), speakers included a welcome and introduction by Master Builders Association of Western Pennsylvania's Dave Daquelente; opening comments by PJ Dick and Turner Construction (Noah Shaltes and Tara Connor); presentation by Pittsburgh Carbon Leadership Forum and WAP (Julia Wattick and Alex Co); glass presentation by Vitro North America (Justin D’Alessandro); steel presentation by NUCOR Steel (John Cooper); interiors presentation by Mohawk (Jennifer Prevade); architect perspective by Perkins Eastman (Jane Hallinan) and contractor perspective by Turner Construction Company (Kayla Reddington and Tara Connor). Closing remarks were by Tim Mackin, MBA director of services and operations; 50 MBA members attended the event. Master Builders Association of Western Pennsylvania, Inc. is a trade association whose membership includes more than 255 of the top general contractors, construction managers, specialty contractors, and service and supplier companies in the region's commercial construction industry. Collectively, the membership accounts for more than 80 percent of the commercial construction in the area. Members of the MBA are also members of the Associated General Contractors of America. Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge recently spoke at the Aquarium and Zoo Facilities Association annual conference in Louisville, KY. Kresge’s presentation, Concrete’s Role in Sustainability, focused on the cement and concrete industries’ efforts to reduce concrete’s carbon footprint. The presentation highlighted the Portland Cement Association’s Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality. Kresge also discussed the environmental benefits of using concrete, such as heat island mitigation, reduced lighting requirements, reduced fuel consumption and longevity/resilience. He also briefed attendees on pervious concrete's role in stormwater management. Kresge was joined by Ohio Concrete Association Southwest Promotion Director Ryan McAleer, Kentucky Concrete Association Director of Education and Marketing Greg Smith, and NRMCA Producer member Rick Roth from Hilltop Companies. Join the Cement Council of Texas Day of Concrete in San Antonio on Tuesday, November 7, where attendees will learn the best practices in economic evaluation, design and construction of concrete parking lots through presentations by industry experts. This course is intended for civil and geotechnical engineers, architects, landscape architects, public works officials and others who design parking lots and similar hardscaping. Contractors, product suppliers and land developers will also benefit from this seminar. Five professional development hours can be earned by attending this event. Registration includes both the American Concrete Institute printed guide and specification (a retail value of over $140) due to a special limited arrangement with ACI.
