The need for continued communication of the many problem-solving capabilities that low carbon concrete can provide to all stakeholders of the construction process was the major takeaway from the Ozinga Sustainability Summit held earlier this month in Oak Brook, IL. Various sustainability experts presented to more than 60 contractors, structural engineers, architects and ready mixed concrete personnel with information outlining the current environmental direction and trends in the ready mixed concrete industry.
The researchers at the MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub (CSHub) have released their Spring 2023-2024 Review which summarizes the work taking place under the areas of carbon neutrality, infrastructure, resilience and workforce, and details many of the advancements and progress made on each of these fronts. The document includes links to news items, opinion pieces, issue briefs, presentations, webinars and more. Don’t miss this opportunity to catch up on all the developments from the CSHub over the last year. The Concrete Advancement Foundation (CAF) is the main funding source of the Concrete Sustainability Hub which also receives support from the Portland Cement Association. For more information about the CSHub’s work or other programs supported by CAF, please contact Foundation President Julia Garbini. Buildings
On May 9, NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Frank Mruk attended the MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub Spring Advisory meeting (seen here) along with his colleague Brian Killingsworth and representatives from ACPA, CEMEX, the Concrete Advancement Foundation, Heidelberg, Holcim, Sika, Summit Materials and others. Randy Kirchain, Hessam AzariJafari and Andrew Laurent hosted the meeting which reviewed and discussed strategies for realizing lower-carbon concrete at scale; designing sustainable structures and climate friendly communities; concrete as an enabler of low carbon technology; building world-class infrastructure with finite resources and creating cities that are resilient to the impacts of extreme heat and natural hazards.
NRMCA participated in the 34th Annual National Fire and Emergency Services Symposium and Dinner held in late April in Washington, DC, and hosted by the Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI). As part of the symposium schedule of events, NRMCA Senior Vice President, Codes and Standards, Shamim Rashid-Sumar joined fellow CFSI members (seen here in front of the Capitol) to advocate for the Fire Grants and Safety Act (S.870). The proposed legislation includes reauthorization of the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), the federal agency responsible for implementation and enforcement of codes and standards, and that also supports resilience in the built environment.
