Association & Industry News
NRMCA has named Deborah Malone chief operating officer of the Association, effective Monday, June 17. Ms. Malone will be responsible for running NRMCA’s day-to-day operational activities that help drive value for membership and align with NRMCA’s mission. She will also be working across the organization to help identify and develop new revenue streams.
Discover the perfect platform to showcase your products and services and maximize your reach by connecting with potential customers at NRMCA’s ConcreteWorks 2024. Reserve your spot by Friday, June 14, to be included in the first round of booth assignments. The application process utilizes a priority point formula for the assignment of exhibit space. Applications and payment received before June 14 will be part of the priority assignment process. Past ConcreteWorks exhibitors will be assigned first by priority number; new exhibitors will then be assigned in the order in which they were received. Applications received on or after June 14 will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis by exhibition management. Exhibit space costs can be found on the event website. Reserve your space in the expo hall by completing the Exhibit Booth Application and returning it to NRMCA along with the required payment. NRMCA’s ConcreteWorks 2024 will take place October 10-14 at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center in Aurora, CO. NRMCA’s Think First monthly safety initiatives feature different industry-specific safety items relevant to seasons, current topics or industry concerns. The initiatives are meant to be shared, used as a training tool, printed, posted or distributed; all of which are encouraged. This month’s topic, seen here, is Hazard Communication and the Concrete Industry. Click here to view this month’s and all previous issues. For more information, contact Kevin Walgenbach at kwalgenbach@nrmca.org. On May 29, NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Frank Mruk presented Quantifying and Decarbonizing Concrete 10 to E2 Engineers' Concord, MA and New London, CT, offices. More than 16 structural engineers attended the session which was moderated by E2 Principals Scott Erricson and Chad Vogt who saw an earlier version of the presentation at an April American Institute of Architects' Connecticut chapter spring conference. E2 Engineers’ team of structural engineers and industry professionals has a variety of skills and backgrounds, ranging from building technology to nuclear engineering. They were a 2024 recipient of the NRMCA Concrete Innovation Award for the New Canaan (CT) library project. The Build With Strength program is a leader in supporting structural engineers in the specification of high-performance, energy-efficient concrete buildings. For more information, contact Frank Mruk at fmruk@nrmca.org. The estimated ready mixed concrete produced in February is 21.6 million cubic yards, 10% higher than in February 2023. The estimated production in the U.S. through February is 50 million cubic yards, approximately 2.0% lower than that during the same period in 2023. Based on corrected cement shipments reported by USGS, the estimated production in the U.S. for 2023 was 400 million cubic yards, approximately 0.3% lower than that in 2022. Ready mixed concrete production is estimated from cement shipments reported by the U.S. Geological Survey. More detail is available here for NRMCA members under Production Statistics. Structural engineers from throughout Minnesota gathered at the annual Minnesota Structural Engineers Association Annual Seminar and Trade Show held in Edina last month. The program featured two ready mixed concrete industry presentations that demonstrated the sustainability as well as the versatility of concrete products. Donn Thompson, NRMCA senior director, building innovations (seen here at right presenting the Concrete Innovation Award to Cemstone Senior Materials Engineer Kevin Heindel, PE) and John Lee, director of business development for NRMCA Producer member Cemstone Products Co., co-presented Sustainability in Concrete, outlining available tools and strategies for lowering the embodied carbon in ready mixed concrete specified for buildings, pavements and infrastructure projects. Thompson also highlighted the functionality of NRMCA’s new online Concrete Carbon Calculator to the group of more than 60 attendees.
Buildings
Last week, NRMCA participated in the National Institute of Building Sciences 2024 Building Innovation Conference (BI2024), an event that brought together government agencies, contractors, architects, scientists, and other public and private stakeholders to improve the built environment. The focus was on resilience, technology, and building performance and sustainability. NRMCA's Darryl Dixon, director, energy codes and standards; Tiffany Reed-Villarreal, director, sustainability codes and standards; and Shamim Rashid-Sumar, senior vice president, codes and standards, exhibited and discussed with conference attendees the Association’s activities in resilience and sustainability in the built environment. They showcased NRMCA's Concrete Design Center, specifications expertise, 2024 Survey of Insurance Costs and the new Carbon Calculator Tool. As part of the conference, Tiffany Reed-Villarreal (seen here) presented on Addressing Sustainability Through Codes and Standards. She assessed the role of sustainability codes and standards in driving transparency in the AEC industry while highlighting concrete’s contributions to sustainability and innovation in current buy-clean federal and state requirements. For more information on NRMCA’s codes and standards advocacy activities, contact Shamim Rashid-Sumar at ssumar@nrmca.org.
Build With Strength (BWS) representatives recently met Massachusetts’ Climate Chief’s Director of Strategic Initiatives Nick Black in Boston. Participants (seen here, from left to right) included NRMCA Director of Sustainability, Codes and Standards, Tiffany Reed-Villarreal; NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Frank Mruk; MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub Director and Principal Research Scientist Randolph Kirchain; MaCAPA Executive Director Craig Dauphinais and Build With Strength Massachusetts members Matthew McKenna and Guy Glodis. Pavement
NRMCA Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge and Ohio Concrete Association Central/Southeast Promotion Director Lisa Weaver-Moon recently met with representatives from the Columbus office of VanTrust Real Estate, LLC. Together, they discussed the benefits of concrete pavement and the potential impact it can have on VanTrust’s portfolio. Kresge and Weaver-Moon shared with VanTrust the experiences of other developers who have included concrete pavement in their designs. Kresge explained how concrete pavement can provide a positive first impression to potential clients, which can give VanTrust an advantage over its competitors when it comes to leasing/selling. The VanTrust representatives encouraged Kresge and Weaver-Moon to contact geotechnical engineering firms that provide pavement designs for their projects to further discuss proper concrete pavement design. Since its inception in 2010, VanTrust Real Estate has developed over 65 million square feet of industrial, office and mixed-use projects. Most recently, the firm was named the 2023 Developer of the Year by the NAIOP Commercial Real Estate Development Association. For more information, contact Phil Kresge at pkresge@nrmca.org. Calendar
