The next Concrete Innovations Session, Decarbonization Strategies, is scheduled for Wednesday, June 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern time. This session will present three unique decarbonization strategies for concrete. The first will focus on reducing the reliance on conventional reinforcing by introducing fiber reinforcing materials at the microscale, allowing the integration of tensile properties in structural design to improve durability and efficiency. The second will feature a new generation of cement and concrete strength enhancers that improve the viability and performance of blended cements. The third will focus on biochar, a carbon negative material that sequesters more than twice its weight in carbon dioxide, helping reduce the embodied carbon footprint of concrete.

Topics and speakers include:

  • Improving the Efficiency of Concrete Structural Design through Alternative Reinforcement: A Serviceability Based Design Approach - Barzin Mobasher, PhD. PE. FACI, FRILEM, professor, School of Sustainable Engineering and Built Environment, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ
  • Innovations in Low-carbon Cement Additives and Concrete Admixtures - Mike Stanzel, technical sales representative, cement additives - North America, CHRYSO & GCP and Terry Harris, senior director technical services & Ductilcrete Slab Systems, CHRYSO & GCP
  • Biochar-Cement Concrete: The Path to Carbon Neutrality and Strength Parity - Lori Tunstall, assistant professor, Colorado School of Mines

Register here and visit www.concreteinnovations.com for session details. For more information, contact Lionel Lemay at llemay@nrmca.org or 847-922-7995.

On June 7, the NRMCA Build With Strength team was joined by American Institute of Architects (AIA) Executive Vice President/Chief Executive Officer Lakisha Ann Woods at the NRMCA/PCA booth at the AIA24 Conference on Architecture held in Washington, DC. AIA24 is a premier annual conference that celebrates multidisciplinary solutions from across the built environment and the power of designing a better world. (Seen here are, from left to right, Derek Torres, Michael Wymant, Lakisha Ann Woods, Frank Mruk, Donn Thompson and Lionel Lemay.)

At the conference NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Frank Mruk and MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub Deputy Director Hessam Azari Jafari presented Leveraging the Properties of Concrete in Net-Zero Buildings to an audience of over 80 attendees.

The Build With Strength program is a leader in supporting architects and the AEC industry in the specification of high-performance, energy-efficient concrete buildings. For more information, contact Lionel Lemay at llemay@nrmca.org, Michael Wyman, mwymant@nrmca.org; Frank Mruk, fmruk@nrmca.org; Donn Thompson, dthompson@nrmca.org or Derek Torres, dtorres@nrmca.org.

Earlier this month Build With Strength Director, Building Innovations, Justin McCain met with architects and structural engineers to promote concrete throughout Austin and San Antonio by educating the firms on building low- to mid-rise buildings with insulated concrete forms (ICF). McCain then showed how they can achieve their sustainability goals through consistent specifications and partnering with ready mixed producers early in the design process.

NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Brandon Wray, continued Build With Strength’s push to be the trusted expert for key concrete designers through a targeted lunch and learn for Saiful Bouquet Structural Engineers in its Los Angeles and San Diego offices. Saiful Bouquet is a top 10 structural engineer in California and has designed such iconic concrete projects as Metropolis Los Angeles and the Landmark Residential Tower. The presentation (seen here, with Wray standing next to the screen), Low Carbon Concrete: How to Reduce, Quantify, and Specify Carbon, focused on leveraging performance-based specifications to achieve efficient and practical embodied carbon reductions that are paired with strategic carbon goals.

The event was attended by nearly 50 structural engineers and led to direct conversations involving upcoming projects and how NRMCA’s design assistance and specification review service can help the project teams put concrete’s best foot forward.

Last week, the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) published its Annual Report to the President of the United States; the 2023 report highlights NIBS’ work to improve the safety, performance and resilience of the nation’s buildings and communities; enable innovation and response use of technology across the building industry; and provide continuing education opportunities to ensure a competent and vibrant workforce.

NRMCA provided input on section titled Moving Forward Report: Findings and Recommendations from the Consultative Council which defines solutions to key challenges faced within the built environment and highlights resilience, sustainability and energy efficiency-based solutions, all of which benefit the concrete industry.

NRMCA is an organizational member of NIBS. In addition to the Consultative Council, NRMCA participates in NIBS’ Multi-Hazard Mitigation Council in order to promote disaster resilience and whole-building strategies to strengthen individual buildings, businesses and communities.

Pavement

NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Luke McHugh and Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge recently represented NRMCA at the I.CON East 2024 conference hosted by the NAIOP Commercial Real Estate Development Association in Jersey City, NJ. McHugh (seen here, wearing navy blazer) and Kresge manned the Pave Ahead tabletop exhibit which focused on concrete parking lots for warehouses and concrete overlays of existing asphalt pavement. According to NAIOP personnel, this year’s sold-out conference was their largest ever with over 1,200 in attendance.

Besides manning the booth, McHugh and Kresge also spoke with representatives from several key national accounts, including industrial property developers, general contractors and property management firms. Additionally, they were able to talk with engineers from national companies Kimley-Horn and Bowman Consulting.

Formerly known as the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties, NAIOP Commercial Real Estate Development Association is the leading organization for developers, owners and related professionals in office, industrial and mixed-use real estate

The Spring 2024 newsletter of the National Concrete Consortium is now available online and includes the following items:

What Can Be Done to Reduce the Embodied Carbon Emissions of Concrete? - The Spring 2024 NC² Moving Advancements into Practice (MAP) Brief from the NC² Resource Library reviews several practical and implementation-ready strategies for material selection and proportioning that transportation agencies, contractors and concrete suppliers can use to reduce the cradle-to-gate embodied carbon emissions of paving concrete in readily quantifiable ways.

NRMCA is still accepting applications for the Excellence in Quality Award contest. A company must be an NRMCA Producer member in good standing to participate. Companies can enter as a company or a division. Applicants are asked to respond to a multiple-choice type application form that generates their scores. Companies or divisions that achieve a score of 75% or greater will be recognized at NRMCA's ConcreteWorks, scheduled from October 10 - 14 in Aurora, CO. The deadline for receiving completed award applications is June 30.

There are several advantages to participating in this award program:
1. It provides recognition to the companies that maintain high-quality standards.
2. Companies that apply will be provided with industry average quality benchmark data.
3. The award criteria can serve as an excellent quality improvement tool for companies.
4. Companies have used the award criteria for conducting internal quality audits.

Click here to access the link for the Excel file. Before starting the survey, please download the file to your computer and save it using a different file name (company/division name). Then e-mail the completed Excel file and required attachments to Karen Bean at kbean@nrmca.org. For more information, contact Vice President, Technical Services, Karthik Obla at kobla@nrmca.org.
