NRMCA is still looking for good men and women to serve on the Board of Directors. While serving on the Board requires both commitment and energy, it is a rewarding opportunity to give back to the industry.
NRMCA represents a broad range of ready mixed concrete companies across the United States and its success is a direct result of the skills and expertise of its professional staff working in conjunction with Board members. Director nominees must be committed to promoting NRMCA programs and working in the best interest of its membership and the industry at large. The Board provides strategic direction, fiduciary oversight and governance of the organization’s operations while operating in accordance with NRMCA’s Strategic Plan and Vision 2030 objectives.
NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Brandon Wray presented on the topic of low carbon concrete and performance-based specifications for Salas O’Brien’s structural engineering group, formerly KPW Structural Engineers, a Top 30 engineering firm based on the West Coast. The event took place at the firm's Oakland, CA, office and was joined virtually by remote employees. Discussions focused on how to implement performance specifications that allow concrete producers to supply the most efficient and sustainable concrete mix designs for a given application. The Salas O’Brien team is designing a large concrete-framed structure where the owner is adamant about pursing sustainability goals. This focus has led to questions about non-concrete framed options under the guise of improving sustainability. Fortunately, the firm is motivated to keep the structure concrete framed by bringing Build With Strength resources and expertise to the broader project team while working with local producers. For questions regarding the event, contact Brandon Wray at bwray@nrmca.org. Sponsorship opportunities for NRMCA’s largest event of the year, ConcreteWorks 2024 and the National Mixer Driver Championship (NMDC) being held October 10 - 14 at the Gaylord Rockies in Aurora, CO (metro Denver), are still available – hurry before they sell out. Member companies have the opportunity to sponsor NRMCA’s ConcreteWorks 2024 Reception and/or can be an event sponsor for the NMDC. There are many other highly visible sponsorship selections remaining for the fall event, along with several other brand recognition opportunities. The next Concrete Innovations session, Mix Design Optimization, is scheduled for Wednesday, July 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern time. This session presents the concept of mix design optimization as one way to reduce concrete’s carbon footprint. The first presentation highlights the tremendous CO2 saving opportunities of reducing the total paste volume of concrete while simultaneously using high performance, low‐clinker cements. The second will present slag cement as an efficient, proven, low carbon, supplementary cementitious material that improves concrete performance while lowering carbon footprint. The third will present an EPD tool to conduct company and plant-level analytics that empowers concrete producers to navigate their EPD portfolio and assess plant performance and to get the right low carbon mix designs. Topics and speakers include:

Last week, NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Frank Mruk attended The American Institute of Architects' Rhode Island (AIA RI) chapter Top Golf event (seen here) which supported young emerging architects. The event was supported by numerous architecture/engineering and construction firms in the region; more than 50 participants attended. The AIA RI Emerging Professionals Committee promotes education, leadership development and community involvement among emerging architects, architecture graduates, Associate AIA members and architects licensed 10 years or less. AIA RI encourages the next generation of architects to start leading their communities by heading committees, organizing events, participating in workshops and attending chapter events. The Build With Strength program is a leader in supporting emerging architects in the specification of high-performance, energy-efficient concrete buildings. For more information, contact Frank Mruk at fmruk@nrmca.org. The NRMCA’s Build With Strength initiative is a proud sponsor of the Advancing Construction Decarbonization symposium to be held in Denver July 15 - 17. The third annual conference brings together hundreds of sustainability and project leaders from across North America to solve and advance carbon reduction strategies, reports NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Patrick Matsche. Buildings produce 39% of CO2 emissions globally and building owners, investors and regulatory bodies are demanding construction firms and material suppliers rethink their approach to sustainability, including the way they use concrete. NRMCA is recognized as a leading expert to help the construction industry meet its decarbonization goals. In addition to sponsoring the conference, NRMCA will also speak during the general session and host a reception after the program on July 16 to celebrate progress toward carbon neutrality. It’s been 10 years since NRMCA published its first Industry-Wide EPD and Benchmark Report and the concrete industry has lowered its carbon footprint by 21% since then. Click here for more information on the reception and here for the conference itself. NRMCA’s Build With Strength platform is a leader in supporting structural engineers and architects in specifying low carbon, high-performance concrete. NRMCA's Pave Ahead local paving division recently co-hosted two concrete seminars with the Ohio Concrete Association (OCA). The half-day events, held in Washington County Courthouse and Vermillion, were targeted toward county engineers and township officials. Agenda topics included Internal Curing of Bridge Decks, Flexible Concrete for Road Widening and Other Applications, Concrete Overlays of Asphalt Roundabouts and Intersections and Concrete Repair for Common Problems in Sidewalks and Slabs. Presenters included Jeremy Clinger and Chris Wittler of Premiere Concrete Admixtures; Warren Schlatter, P.E., Defiance County engineer; John DeSantis, Youngstown State University and Mike Mahoney, Euclid Chemical. OCA Senior Promotion Director Wayne Moening and Jim Barnhart, P.E., retired, also presented. NRMCA Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge also presented on Concrete Roundabout and Intersection Design and Cost Trends for Concrete and Other Construction Materials. Approximately 30 engineers and municipal officials attended each of the seminars. All the presentations were well received and were followed by good, interactive question and answer sessions, Kresge said. For more information, contact Phil Kresge at pkresge@nrmca.org. Calendar
